Jottings
by Johnnie
Looking at the old pictures people are bringing in is taking up
a lot of my time.
Not that I have much else to do. Some of the memories are
very sad and some are pretty funny. ,
Alice (Bremer) Luedke was in the office last week and I showed
her some of the old pictures. We started reminiscing about the
years we worked for abstract and/or title companies when we
typed all day long for 20 cents a page! These were summer jobs.
There was no air conditioning in the courthouse at that time
and we worked in the basement beneath the county clerk’s office.
Our desks were wooden tables and our typewriters were NOT
electric. Big fans were aimed at us all day and we understood the
worth of paperweights. We had a run sheet telling us what need-
ed to be typed next, double spaced with a carbon copy. We
checked jt off, climbed the stairs and lugged down 20 pound
books, then took them back up stairs, lucky if we had two assign-
ments from one book. No problem. We were young and healthy.
We typed Deeds, Deeds of Trusts, Liens, Oil and Gas Leases
and other legal documents - some with long, boring, but vital,
field notes - metes and bounds descriptions.
And the “acknowledgements” at the end of each instrument
where a notary acknowledged that it was signed by a specific per-
son, were so pounded into my brain that if for some strange rea-
son you needed me to, I could type you one without missing a
beat.
I remember working with people my age, with mothers of some
of the people I went to school with and some older ladies who
wanted to make a little extra money.
One of those ladies told my mother it was “brainless” work, typ-
ing all day. My mother was highly insulted that anyone would think
her daughter would waste a day in “brainless" activity.
But....she was right, it was venjr boring, rote and mechanical
work.
At twenty cents a page, I earned enough to buy basket cheese-
burgers and Cokes at Lands Drive-In when the hunger struck.
Ah, but that’s another story.

Winter Texans honored

Winter Texans from as far north as Canada enjoyed the annual
Winter Texan Farewell Dinner sponsored by the Sinton Chamber of
Commerce.
The annual dinner held at the Butter Churn Restaurant, Thursday,
March 16, hosted approximately 100 guests from'the Hitching Post
and the RV Park at Rob and Bessie Welder Park.
The group was entertained by the Sinton High School Jazz Band
and enjoyed various door prizes.
"Winter Texans have a choice out of any southern state on where
they want to spend their winter months and they choose Sinton,
Texas. This is just our way of thanking them for coming back every
year”: said Dina Garcia, executive director of the chamber.
She also said that the RV Park has since doubled in size and it
remains full with reservations made a year in advance. ,
“The Winter Texans always comment that they return because of
the "friendliness" of the community," said Garcia.
