The year began with
most of Texas in ex-
treme drought. But that
changed quickly as
heavy rains arrived,
especially in May when
widespread flooding
occurred. From Jan. 1
through June 30, Dal-
las/Fort Worth Interna-
tional Airport recorded
rain on 67 days, with a
total of 35.58 inches.
But drought quickly
returned to North Tex-
as. Since July 1, rain has
fallen on only five days,
with a paltry total of just 3.52 inches. El Nino is still expec-
ted to bring welcome rainfall this winter, but there is no sign
of that starting yet.

Police looking for suspect
in robbery at PointBank
Police are looking for a man
in connection with a bank rob-
bery Saturday morning in the
1700 block of North Carroll
Boulevard.
Officer Orlando Hinojosa, a
spokesman for Denton police,
said the PointBank location
was robbed at 9:33 a.m. by a
white man in his late 30s or
early 40s.
The report said he was clean
shaven with short hair, a camou-
flage baseball cap, a green plaid
button-down shirt, and tan or
olive green shorts.
The man handed the teller a
note saying he was going to rob
the bank, but no weapon was
seen. After he collected the
money, he fled eastbound on
foot.
man told police Friday morning
his pickup was missing. He had
left the keys in the center con-
sole.

DO DENTON’S STREET SWEEPERS HAVE A SET

tine traffic stop.
According to a police re-
port, the man failed to stop at a
designated point and was sub-
sequently charged with posses-
sing less than 2 ounces of mari-
day:
University of North Texas
police made eight arrests, issued
seven citations and gathered in-
formation for U reports.
Police ask that anyone with
information on the crime con-
tact Investigator Mike Sweet at

mike.sweet@cityofdenton.com.
Denton’s sweepers don’t have a set schedule, according
to Keith Gabbard, head of the city’s streets department. In
2014, the city’s two sweepers ran for 5,555 miles and
picked up 3,637 yards of material, or more than 300 dump
truck loads. The material is picked up to help keep storm
sewers clean. Crews screen and compost the material so
that the department can reuse it as backfill.
The sweepers clean Denton’s thoroughfares every Friday.
On Fridays, the drivers try to get out early before traffic
begins, Gabbard said. In those parts of the city where there
is a lot of on-street parking, crews go back to sweep during
holidays when there are fewer cars.
To help the street department keep your street clean,
Gabbard recommends trimming low-hanging branches on
trees close to the street so the sweepers can get under
them. Also, residents should not push their leaves from their
yard into the street. Instead, those leaves should be bagged
and left for curbside pickup by the Solid Waste Department.

Abbott wins barbecue
bet, will pay up anyway
The Longhorns’ upset of the
Sooners means Gov. Greg Abbott
won his wager with his Oklaho-
ma counterpart, Mary Fallin.
But Abbott said Saturday he’s
going to pay up on the bet any-
way. Texas topped No. 10 Okla-
homa 24-17 during Saturday’s
annual Red River Rivalry game
in Dallas.
Per an Abbott-Fallin bet, that
means Fallin and Oklahoma
City’s Head County Bar-B-Q,will
sponsor 600 meals at Austin’s
Capital Area Food Bank.
Abbott said in a statement,
though, that he’ll ensure the
nonprofit Rescue Mission in
Oklahoma City still receives a
shipment of barbecue from
Railhead in Fort Worth, which
was set to happen if OU won.
Abbott declared “Don’t mess
with Texas,” but added that en-
suring that needy people in both
states get meals was more im-
portant than the game.
