Board to hear school improvement plan
Ryan Elementary
principal to speak
By Britney Tabor
Staff Writer
btabor@dentonrc.com
A public hearing on Ryan El-
ementary School’s plans to im-
prove its state accountability rat-
ings will be conducted at the
Denton school board meeting
tonight.
The board will meet at 6 p.m.
at the Stephens Central Services
Building, 1307 N. Locust St.
In August the elementary
school received a “needs im-
provement” rating and was the
only Denton ISD campus that
failed to meet state accountabili-
ty standards.
The school needed to reach a
target score of 28 to meet the
closing performance gaps indi-
cator and fell one point shy of
the mark.
Debbie Merki, Ryan Ele-
mentary principal, said that she
and a couple of teachers will be
presenting the school’s plan for
improvement tonight. The
plan’s goals are improving aca-
demic achievement, test scores
and motivating students, she
said.
Several improvement strate-
gies are already being imple-
mented at the school, Merki
said.
Those strategies include
teachers working more closely
together, giving more feedback
to students and having a better
understanding of the Texas Es-
sential Knowledge and Skills
(TEKS) state standards for what
a student should know and have
the ability to do, Merki said.
Ryan Elementary is looking
to motivate students by recog-
nizing their elforts through pro-
grams such as Wrangler of the
Week, allowing students to ring
a bell in the school’s foyer daily
and student goal setting.
Teachers sat down with par-
ents at recent teacher-parent
conferences to discuss where in-
dividual students are now and
where teachers would like those
students to end the school year
academically, Merki said.
Parent curriculum nights are
also planned.
“The plan is not drastically
dilferent from last year. We’re
just trying to get better at what
we’re doing,” Merki said. “We’re
just trying to refine our practice
and get better at what we’re do-
ing.
“Our work is very important
and [we] understand in being
accountable by the STAAR test.
Our work is more important be-
cause we’re preparing students
for life.”
The Texas Education Agency
requires that Ryan Elementary
create an action plan for im-
provement as a result of the
school’s needs improvement rat-
ing.
According to the Texas Edu-
cation Code, the school must al-
so conduct a public hearing for
the targeted improvement plan.
According to a document at-
tached with tonight’s school
board agenda, the board’s ap-
proval of the plan “will allow
compliance with TEA require-
ments.”
The school board is expected
to consider approval of the Ryan
Elementary improvement plan
later in the evening.
The board will also discuss
and receive the district fiscal au-
dit report for the 2013-14 school
year and discuss an update on
the cooperation between Den-
ton ISD and various public ser-
vice agencies within school dis-
trict boundaries.

intoxication charges

ment.
While she was on the phone

Perry eyes another
run for president
Texas Gov. Rick Perry is in
New Hampshire saying he’s pre-
paring to make a second run for
president.
The GOP hopeful says he’ll
make a decision in May or June.
A slew of possible candidates
visited New Hampshire to aide
candidates in the midterms, but
Perry is the first to return after
last week’s election. Perry
stopped in Manchester and
Keene on Monday after a full
day of events Sunday.
He placed sixth in the New
Hampshire primary in 2012 and
has been working to rehabilitate
his image by meeting with vot-
ers and activists statewide.
Perry says Republicans won
control of the Senate because
voters are sick of Democratic
policies, not because they love
Republicans.
Perry says the party should
focus on energy, taxes and secur-
ing the border.
