By DALE JOHNSON
The Anton Bulldugs iiave shown
better defensive ability than offen-
sive technique this season, accord
ing to head coach Eugene Carter
The coach points to the fact that
the .bulldogs hav e scored only 1
points in their first two games tc
emphasize his statement.
Yet with the small point total
the Bulldogs have still picked ut
a 7-0 win over Amherst, while los
ing last week to New Deal. 26-6.
Though there are nine returning
lettermen for the Anton squad, on-
ly three of them saw any extensive
action last season. These three,
her mo- j quarterback Ronnie Karvas. tackle
ther. Mrs. O. W. Marcom; Mrs. Gary Don Newton, and end* Doug
R. L. Wham, mother of the bride- J Goen also are the Bulldog tri-cap-
groom-elect; and Miss Matalie (tains.
Carter points out Goen and New-
ton as being the best ball-players
on the club. Fingering only linemen ■
as top men also spotlights the fact
| that Anton has no offensive thrust j
The Anton coach this season is j
depending on a nucleus of 11 boys!
to carry the grid fortunes of the !
j 'Digs.
At ends. Carter uses Goen. 170
| pound senior, on the right flank.*
j while alternating Carlton Parker. ;
; 160 pound junior and 160 lettorman
| junior Charles Richards at the left |
line anchor post.
f Two lettermen mar. the tackle j
| posts w ith Newton, a senior at 170 i
j pounds, handling the right side,
j ar.d Pat Walthall, another senior j
[ who tips the scales at 150, on the-'
1 left.
A 170 pound junior letterman,
! Jerry Overstreet, starts at the right
: guard slot w ith Leroy Grant, al-
1 so a junior and at 140 the smallest
starting lineman, protecting the left
I side.
Fred Givens. 150. and a sopho-
I more, is the center on the starting
| Anton line.
Brownie Troop 252 from the Cac-| Karvas, who weighs 160 and is!
" a junior alternates at quart i baric
with a 162 pound sophomore, Oren
McGrevv.
Ronnie Riffle, a sophomore let-,
terman, w ho weighs in at 140, runs ,
from the left half post w hile Kirby f
Williams, one of only three kehiors 1
on the squad and Joe Burt, alter-
nate at right hall Williams is a I
letterman who weighs 140 and Burl 1
is a 155 pound sophomore.
At the fullback slot is J L. Smith
n letterman junior who weighs 165.
Overall. Carter says he has .suf-
ficient size with none of his start- j
ers going below 140. though the big- ;
gest man on the squad, freshman
fullback Huey Barnett carries only (
180 pounds.
Carter says the team has lots [
of spirit and is a g-xxl group of !
bovs with which to work.
Though he feels that the hull- j
dogs probably will not go too far [
this year, tile coach Says that next j
year or the year after, should be a |
good season for Anton as nir>* of;
his squad members are freshmen !
and five are sophomores. He also
has nine juniors to round out his i
future prospects.
Carter thinks Hale Center- a.gair
will dominate District 5-A wit!' j
Crosby ton. Ral’s. Irialou and Pet- j
ershurg hunched close behind
though not p/ocossanly in that or-
der. And with a note of pessimism !
ihe Bulldog mentor predicts Anton j
will bring up the rear
Carter and his assistant. Dave |
Smith, are teaching the Bulldog i
the Sphl T offense, using rushing j
as their primary < ffensive weapon !
Though Caller says they hope te j
build up an air arm If possible j
