THURSDAY JUNE G, 1991 THE TEAGUE CHRONICLE - PAGE FOUR
Senior Citizens Ask?
-by Twila Lyles-
Reumon (’enter was extra busy
T hursday with a short celebration to
honor Nancy on her recent marriage.
We didn’t know about it before it
happened so the congratulations had
to be belated.
One of our faithful volunteers at
the center, Ruth Oaks, did all the
preparations like ordering a cake and
making Nancy a beautiful wooden
wall hanging. Some of the partici-
pants and all ol the Reunion Center
stall helped pay for it but I had the
hardest job of all and dial wasgetting
Nancy out there at a certain time
w ithout her getting suspicious. For
awhile n looked like we would have
to have the party without Nancy as
Shirley had to take her baby to the
doctor and Nancy would have to drive
the van but the league van drivers
helped us out and even got to be there
lor cake. I think Nancy really was
surprised and enjoyed being honored.
It was also Odie’s birthday so it
became a two/fold celebration. You
realize all of this can’t take more than
I 5 or 20 minutes as everyone has to
get back to cooking, answering the
phone and driving the van but as the
old saying goes, “It’s the thought that
counts!”
HINT FOR THE DAY: Success
in marriage is much more than find-
ing the right person, it is being the
right person. And Nancy, you are ..
Good luck. . . .we all love you.

Social
Security
News
There may be many people living
in this area who have not applied for
Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
payments because they believe the
income they have makes them ineli-
gible.
People can be eligible for SSI
even though they receive a small
Social Security check or some other
small pension or annuity, according
to David Helmer, Social Security
Branch Manager in Corsicana.
SSI payments can be made to
people who arc 65 or older, or blind,
or disabled who do not have much
income and do not own much per-
sonal or other property.
Now the maximum Federal SSI
payment is S407 for an individual
and S610 for an eligible couple. The
amount actually payable may be less
if the person has other income, Mr.
Helmer said . The first S20 a month
of unearned income docs not count
but the remainder reduces the SSI
payment dollar for dollar.
A person can often have earnings
from work and still get some SSI
payments. The first S65 in a month
docs not count at all and only half the
amount above $65 counts. However,
any work activity by a disabled per-
son must be reviewed by the Social
Security office personnel.
There is a limit on the amount of
property a person can own, but not all
property counts. A person’s resi-
dence does not count, nor do personal
effects, household goods, or a car, in
most cases.
Those who are approaching age
65 should apply the month before
their 65th birthday to make sure they
receive payments as early as pos-
sible.
People who know of someone
who may be eligible for SSI should
encourage him or her to call or visit
the Corsicana Social Security office.
Anyone applying for SSI should be
sure to have available his/her most
recent bank statement and tax state-
ments on any real property owned.
The people at Social Security will be
glad to answer any questions. The
telephone number is (903) 874-8206.
