Funeral Services Held Dec. 31
For Rev. Watts In Oklahoma
Funeral services were held De-
cember 31,1988 at 11 :(X) a. m., in the
First Baptist Church,Oklahoma City,
Oklahoma lor Rev. W. Taft Waits,of
Teague. Pastor Dr. Gene Garrison
and Rev. Joel DeFchr, Associate
Pastor officiated the service.
Interment was in Rose Hill Ceme-
tery, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Rev. W Taft Watts was bom in
Teague, Texas to Ben and Annie
Watts. His parents, along with a
brother, preceded him in death.
Rev. Watts received his early
education in Teague, Texas. His col-
lege education was at Bishop Col-
lege, Marshall, Texas and his gradu-
ate work was at the University of
Oklahoma.
Before coming to Oklahoma City,
Rev. Watts was Pastor of churches in
Texas. The first church he pastored
was West Union, Palestine, Texas.
He later entered the chaplain service
of the US A. The army sent him to the
Officers and Chaplains School at
Harvard University, Boston, Massa-
chusetts. After completing required
training and services in Rome-Sicily
and Germany.
Rev. Watts united in Holy Matri-
mony to Bernice Elizabeth Brashcar.
Leaving the army, he came to
Oklahoma City as Director of the
Baptist Education Center of South-
ern Baptist for thirty-six years. He
taught in the Oklahoma School of
Religion. He integrated black and
white churches, worked with Indi-
ans, Spanish and others in mission
work.
Rev. Watts worked closely with
the now retired Judge Cannon in “dry”
efforts. He held Christian Seminars
at many churches throughout the state
and country.
His recognitions include a plaque
presented at retirement service by
Capital Baptist Association 1945-73
with effectiveness, enthusiasm, and
dedication. Dr. Taft Wallsaddcd new
dimension to the work of fellowship
between Southern and National
Baptist Educational Center in grate-
ful recognition.
The Doctralc of Religion was
presented by Oklahoma School of
Religion.
A plaque presented by Home
Mission Board/Southcm Baptist
Convention for participation in Worid
Wide Religious Crusades, visiting
all countries, being accompanied by
his wife, Bcniicc, who supported his
crusades, both spiritually and physi-
cally.

isterial Alliance at Retirement with
substantial gifts and recognition.
He leaves to cherish his memo-
ries, his wife, Bernice, of the home;
four sisters, Maggie Cox, Teague,
Texas; Eva Byrd, Los Angeles, Cali-
fornia; Bennie Johnson, Houston,
Texas; and Wattic Nealey, Teague,
Texas and a host of nieces and neph-
ews, other relatives and friends.
PHIL AND HELEN VAUGHN, who recently moved to Teague from
Plano, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in their home on
Wednesday, December 28, at 2:15 p.m. Those attending the festive
event included their daughter Mary Katherine Niblack of Fremont.
California, and two of Iheir sons, Joey Vaughn of Bedford and
Weldon Vaughn of Houston. Also attending were daughter-in-law Sue
with grandchildren Vicky and Tony of Bedford and grandson Philip
of LaMarque. Others atiending were Donna Nelson of Port Neches,
and Jane Traynham and Jerry and Dana McCombs of Teague. On
Monday, December 26. the Vaughns were visited by Iheir other son,
Kenneth, daughter-in-law Lenora and grandson Shawn of Rockwall.
Those unable to attend include granddaughter Janet Kennison and
great-granddaughters Rachel Lindsay and Julie Ann of Seattle,
Washington, granddaughter Laura Niblack, grandson Jeffrey Ni-
uiack, granddaughter Gwynn Martinez and great-granddaughter
Megan Renee of Fremont, California.

Retroactive News: The birthday
party was enjoyed by all attending
residents on December 20,1988; al-
termath of an enjoyable Christmas
party on December 17. Two Teague
Kitchen Band members entertained
for the birthday party with a sing-
along featuring Christmas songs
The Christmas Day traditional
dinner was enjoyed by all residents
remaining in “our home” while sev-
eral of the residents enjoyed being
w ith families, relatives, and friends.
Several guests of some residents were
present for the Chrisunas Day din-
ner. inclusive of Cynthia Johnson
(daughter of Louise Thome) and her
friend, who arc both teachers in
Austin. We were honored to have
them as guests. Their sociable inter-
esting con versations were commend
able and appreciated. They enter-
tained with music and song.

Funeral Services Held For
Salyer Lane On January 7th
Funeral services were held Janu-
ary 7 at 3 p.m., in Ricks Funeral
Home Chapel, for Salyer Lane, 81, of
Teague. Rev. Lester Ruth officiated
the service.
Interment was in Greenwood
Cemetery, Teague.
Mr. Lane was bom August 13,
1907, in Anson, Texas. He passed
away January 4, at his residence in
Teague.
He had been a resident of Teague
since 1975, and was a farmer and
affiliated with the Methodist Church.
Mr. Lane is survived by his wife:
Katie Lane, Teague; two sons: Salyer
Alvic Lane, Molalla, Oregon; Tho-
mas Woodrow Lane, Houston; two
daughters: Tommie Louise Evans,
Truth or Consequences, New Mex-
ico; Eva Jane Mathis, Junction,Texas.
Other survivors include three
granddaughters: Teri Evans Gillespie,
Debbie Lane and Mellissia Mathis;
three grandsons: Tommy Don Mathis,
Wayne Pruitt, and Scott Mathis; and
one great-granddaughter: Ashley
Nicole Pruitt.
Ricks Funeral Home was in charge
of arrangements.
Funeral services were held Janu-
ary 8 at 2 p.m., in Ricks Funeral
Home Chapel, for Jess Odell Mad-
dox, 82, of Teague. Rev. Walter
Brown officiated the service.
Interment was in Dew Cemetery,
Freestone County.
Mr. Maddox was bom April 30,
1906, in Freestone County. He passed
away January 6 at the Manor Nursing
Home, Fairfield.
He had lived in Houston for 44
years and moved back to Teague in
1969. He was a retired train Master
for Southern Pacific Railroad, and
affiliated with the Baptist Church.
Mr. Maddox is survived by his
wife: Mrs. Scphrona MadJ

He had lived in Teague most of his
life.
He drove a school bus for the
Teaguel.S.D. for 26 years without an
accident, and farmed and ranched.
He was affiliated with the Baptist
Church.
Mr. Terry is survived by his wife:
Mrs. Artie Terry, Teague; one son:
Dewitt Terry, Sequirn, Washington
State; and 5 grandchildren.
One son, Millard S. Terry, Jr.
(Pete) preceded Mr. Terry in death in
1967.

Church, for Henry Clitis Draper, Sr„
76, of Freestone County. Rev. Rick
Scarborough officiated the service.
Interment was in Shanks Ceme-
tery, Freestone County.
Mr. Draper was bom February
15,1912. He passed away January 6,
in Doctor’s Hospital, Houston. He
had lived in Freestone County for 49
years.
He had worked for Armco Steel
for 32 years, as an electrician and in
the construction business, and was
affiliated with Market Street Baptist
Church.
Mr. Draper is survived by one
daughter: Sonja Fenton, Houston;
four sons: Don Draper, Fort Worth;
Shcrwell Draper, Austin; Henry C.
Draper, Jr., Conroe; and Mikucl K.
Draper, Spring.
Other survivors include five sis-
ters: VemaGlanton, Teague; Pauline
Butler and Willa Fain, both of Hous-
ton; Annie Wilson, Longview; and
Iris Russell, Waco; two brothers:
Riley Draper, Austin; and Francis
Draper, Norman Oklahoma; 10
grandchildren and 3 great-grandchil-
dren.
Pallbearers were Don Draper,
Shcrwell Draper, Mikucl Draper,
Henry Draper, Scott Draper and Brad
Draper.
Ricks Funeral Home was inchargc
of arrangements.
Funeral services were held Janu-
ary 5 at 10 a.m., in Capps Memorial
Chapel, for Freda LaVemc Shanks,
61, of Waco. Bro. Henry Horton of-
ficiated the service. Special music
was provided by organist Frank
O’Banion and singers Teresa and
Steve Black.
Interment was in Woodland
Cemetery, Kirvin.
Mrs. Shanks was bom June 17,
1927, in Freestone County. She
passed away January 1, in Houston.
Mrs. Shanks is survived by a
daughter and son-in-law: Sandra and
Gary Chappell, Houston; and one
son and daughter-in-law: David and
Jerri Shanks, Tomball.
Other survivors include 5 grand-
children: David, Jr., Jennifer, and
Stephen Shanks, all of Tomball; and
Kimberly and Kristina Chappell, both
of Houston.
