Dear Abby • • •
Wrong Kind of Help!
Abigail Van Ilurcn
DEAR ABBY: My husband wrote several
bad checks a few months ago. He is now on
parole, has a good job and is paying back the
money. My problem is my mother. She is con-
stantly on my neck, telling me I should go to
work and help my husband pay off his obliga-
tions. Abby, my husband is strong.y against my
going to work. He says it’s HIS fault that he
has those debts, and he wants to pay them off
h.mself.
1 think my husband is right and I should
respect his wishes. My mother says I am lazy.
She has discussed this matter with several of
bet friends and relatives and they agree with
her Abby, I love my husband and want to do
what is right for him. 1 am not lazy and would
gladly go to work if he wanted me to. I don’t
want this matter brought up every time I see
my mother. How can I put a stop to it?
IN THE MIDDLE
DEAR IN: Tell your mother that you have
made your decision and if she mentions the
subject again she will find herself talking to
herself.
DEAR ABBY. My brother and I had an argu-
ment. He said that a person could have THREE
sets of teeth, and I said a person can have
only two sets Who is right?
mother, who lives in this city, and asked if she
knew whether her daughter had ever received
a gift from us. She said she was certain she
had, because her daughter had commented on
what a lovely and practical gift it was
A few days later I received a very sharp
note from the girl saying she did not appreciate
my calling her mother to “report” her tard ness
in acknowledging the gift, and that I should
have written directly to HER if I had any
doubts about whether it had been received. I
have had a lump in my throat all day, Abby. I
fear I have caused unhappiness and that was
not my intention. Was I wrong to have called
the girl’s mother? My husband said I should
write and ask you.
DEPRESSED
DEAR DEPRESSED: The girl was rude to
have written you such a note. Since you intend-
ed no mischief, your calling the girl’s mother
was understandable. However, when one sends
a gift, the best procedure is to check with the
store from which it was sent. They will have a
record of the delivery.

GISELA
DEAR GISELA: Nature installs about one
and a half sets of choppers (the second is usual-
ly’-complete). After that the dentist takes over
—and the sky’s the limit.
DEAR ABBY: The daughter of a friend of
ours was marred last January. She and her
husband moved to another city. I sent them a
very nice wedding gift, but received no thank-
you note for it. As there is always a possibility
that it was not delivered, 1 telephoned the girl's
JENT1AL TO MICHAEL IN HILLS-
BOROUGH: There is no excuse for a man in
his financial position to owe a bill for eleven
months. Write him a note and tell him that
friendship is friendship, but you have already
carried him longer than his mother did.
For Abby’s booklet, “How To Have A Lovely
Wedding,” send 50 cents to Abby, Box 69700,
Los Angeles, Calif.
Troubled? Write to ABBY, Box 69700, Los
Angeles, Calif. For a personal reply, enclose a
stamped, self-addressed envelope.

Hints From Heloise Mrs. Lowlis
by Heloise Cruse
Dear Heloise:
I a.11 a secretary.
To look well-groomed, it is
necessary that I wear a fresh
pair of white cotton gloves every
day.
After trying every method I
know, including three kinds of
bleaches, the laundry, and the
drycleaners, with no success...
please help!
Secretary
Dear L'ttle Miss;
Yorj’re not alone!
After working with a chemist
recently, we have d.sco/ered
TOE answer to what w» call
“whiter than white”:
Put two quarts of the hottest
water that will com? out of
your faucet into a glass or plas-
tic container. Add one-fourth
cup of electric dishwashing
compound (this is the type used
in electric dishwashers), then
add about two tablespoons of
household bleaches, and stir.
put your white cotton gloves
in and let soak for 30 minutes.
I*o not keep on using this mix-
ture once it has become dis-
colored. Make a new batch.
And, hon, since you are
“Little Miss Snow White,”
rinse the gloves in a mixture
of one <ruart of water and ome-
fourth cup of vinegar.
Now, here's the secret:
Do NOT wring out th? gloves.
Just smooth them, palm side up,
on porcelain, such as the edge
of the bathtub. This will do the
most professional ironing Job
you have ever seen.
The reason it took five months
for me to answer your letter,
was that It took the chemist
and me that long to find the
answer!
Do write again.
Love,
Heloise
Dear Heloise:
W? keep a special cupboard
in the kitchen, with odds and
ends in It for our sm?U toddler
to play with.
This way, we can be busy in
the kitchen and still keep a
close watch on the baby.
The Three D’s
Dear H eloise:
Here’s a hint for those who
work crossword puzzles, and
can never find a sharp pencil;
I try to keep a little Jar
filled with sharp psncils on the
table between our chairs. Yet,
somrtiim s I can't find a sharp
pencil In the lot. I bought a
10-cent m[nature pencil shar-
pener at the dime store, and
dropped it into the bottom of the
, pencil Jar.
When sharpening a pencil,
Just hold the sharpener over
the nearest ashtray.
H isband
D?ar Heloise:
Have you ever tried instant
potatoes In the thickening for
scalloped potatoes?
They are more flavorful than
flour, and very smooth in tex-
ture.
A Friend
Dear H iloise:
When there is apt to be a
lot of mud tracked in, I lay
an old bathtowel over the rug
by the doorway.
The towel wipes the shoes
very nicely, and Is much sai-
ler to wash than a throw rug.
