Get Homes
Ready For
Wintertime
Winler weather is just
around the corner and smart
homeowners are budgeting
their time to include a week-
end of painting, cleaning,
calking and weatherstripping
A fall weekend devoted to
preventative maintenance will
pay big dividends this winter,
according to Architectural
Aluminum Manufacturers As-
sociation.
An important starting place
is in care of windows or slid-
ing glass doors. If they are
aluminum a vacuuming of the
tracks and rails will help them
move smoothly and close
tightly. For cleaning, use
warm water with mild deter-
gent on aluminum prime win-
dows and doors as well as on
separate aluminum storms and
screens. Get combination win-
dows ready for winter simply
by pulling the storm sash into
place. This type of screen can
be removed and thoroughly
hosed before winter storage.
If your windows are wood, be
certain they are repainted, if
required, before using water
-—and before winter arrives.
Old calking rround win-
dows and entrances should be
chiseled out and redone, re-
minds AAMA. Don’t forget
to inspect the sill because a
crack that is widened by win-
ter weather can lead to further
damage. Calk around the out-
side water taps and shut off
the water and drain before
winter. Be sure to calk the
bottoms of columns and posts.
For even better protection pry
the post up far enough to
force the calk completely un-
derneath Calking in the fall
prevents repair bills in the
spring
According to AAMA, foun-
dations are especially vulner
able to winter weather. Raise
low areas around the founda
tion by backfilling in some-
black dirt. Be sure the dirt
is sloped away from the house
