Kelly Olive initiates hippotherapy program
Kelly OBve, a physical therap-
‘ist with the Seguin School Dis-
trict, integrated hippotherapy in
his work for the district.
Hippotherapy, or therapeutic
riding ueas equine-oriented acti-
vities for the purpose of contri-
buting positively to the cognitive,
physios!, emotional, and social
well-being of people with disabili-
ties.
Olive had seen the suooess of
hippotherapy through the Al-
ways Wanted a Riding Experi-
ence (AWARE) program in San
Marcos and while attending a
conference in California.
With so many people in Seguin
interested in hones, Olive felt
there would be support for such a
program. A demonstration in
March got the interest of horse
enthusiasts, parents and others.
It was the beginning of the 8cguin
Hippotherapy Booster Club.
With the help of the booster
dub and the school district, Olive
i students in the high sohool
denoe dees to work with
the handioepped ohildren during
the hippotherapy sessions.
Olive puts the children on the
horses and then walks the horse
and child around. He can inte-
grate the movement of the horse
with the child’s therapy, poten-
tially increasing the child’s
physioal capabilities.
The sohool district’s director of
benefit of the program is the
opportunity it gives the children
to be introduced to the horses and
the bonds that oan be formed be-
tween the child and animal. In
addition to stimulating sensory
input.
Olive is the son of Bill and Lyla
Olive of Aransaa Pass. He and his
wife Janus, alsoaphysioal therap-
ist, and their daughter Jeasioa,
live in Seguin.
