Mixed results?
Wall Street expects Discov-
ery’s latest quarterly snapshot
will show mixed results.
Financial analysts predict
the cable network owner will
report today that its first-quar-
ter earnings were flat,
even as revenue increased
sharply. The company,
whose networks include TLC
and Discovery Channel,
completed its acquisition of
Scripps Networks Interactive
in March.
Game on
Electronic Arts serves up its
quarterly results today.
The company behind the
“Star Wars Battlefront,”
“Mass Effect” and “Madden”
video game franchises deliv-
ered improved results in the
first half of its fiscal year, but
stumbled in the third quarter
that ended in December.
Financial analysts predict
Electronic Arts’ earnings and
revenue increased in its
fiscal fourth quarter.
In a hiring mood
Recent figures on job openings
suggest the labor market is tilting
in favor of people looking for work.
Job openings climbed in January
to 6.2 million, a record level, and
dipped slightly in February to
6.1 million. There are nearly as
many job openings as there are
unemployed people. Economists
project that the Labor Department's
latest Job Openings and Labor
Turnover survey, due out today,
will show job openings held at 6.1
million in March.

The looming arrival of a new kid in paradise took a bite
out of Hawaiian Airlines’ stock last week.
The shares dropped 9.5 percent in two days after
Southwest Airlines named the four California cities
from which it will fly to the
islands. Hawaiian already
serves all four — San Diego,
San Jose, Oakland and
Sacramento. Ominously,
Southwest also said it plans to
eventually fly between islands,
not just from the mainland.
Hawaiian gets half its
revenue flying to and from the
U.S. mainland, and more
competition drives down fares.
The carrier dominates
intra-island flying, a monopoly that has grown stronger
since the demise of Aloha Airlines a decade ago and
Island Air last year.
Stifel analyst Joseph DeNardi says Southwest’s
announcement was “an incremen-
tal negative” for Hawaiian
because it wasn’t sure that
Southwest would go island-hop-
ping. He still thinks Hawaiian has
an advantage over rivals but is
likely to face stiffer competition —
Southwest carries more U.S.
passengers than any airline.
Hawaiian’s new CEO, Peter
Ingram, says Hawaiian is used to
competition and knows the
islands better than anyone.
