WHERE’S THE «
HIGHCHAIR, GRANNY?
DearHeloise:
Not unlike a lot of doting
grandmothers. I have a highchair
for my grandchild that is not used
as often as I wish it were.
Naturally. the chair
accumulates dust and has things
spilled on it now and then between
visits. (Don’t ask me how things
get spilled on it when the little one
is not here! I am one “Mammaw”
who can make a bigger mess any
day than my grandson. I have had
45 more years of pract ice at being
clumsy thanhe has.)
I have found a perfect way to
keepthatlittlechairftrayand all)
clean and neat when it is not used
fora while.
I just put a large plastic bag
over the whole thing.
Some of the larger ones we get
for our trash barrel liners fit
beautifully.
This means the chair will be
sp|c and span for baby’s use. Just
make sure that you put that plastic
bagupoutof his reach during his
visits.

LETTER OF LAUGHTER '
DearHeloise:
I recently read in your column a
letter written by a lady who was
complainingabout sleeve lengths
on blouses.
I have a complaint too. You can
alter the lengthofa sleeve without
too much trouble but have you
ever tried to make a neck
smaller?
Almost all the necks on
women's shirts are too big. The
last two I bought measured 18
inches!
A 300-pounder wouldn’t take
that size—and I’m size 40.
out.
Well, I had the idea of buying a
small photo album (the kind you
raise the plastic page up, put the
photo in, and press the plastic
over it).
I cut out pictures from ragged
books, old magazines, and
newspapers and placed them in
the album.
I also put several pictures of
her mommy. daddy and
grandparents in there, plus one of
her.
The plastic doesn’t tear, and
evendirty little fingerprints wipe
off. Bestofall.she loves it.

DearHeloise:
Haveyouever met a housewife
who enjoys cleaning the tops of
her kitchen cabinets?
All that stretching from a stool
or ladder?
I have found the perfect
solution. In cleaning mine one
day, I ran across some extra
floor tile, 12 inches square, that
the builders had left on top of one
of my cabinets.
I decided to see if these tiles
would fit the top of the cabinets
and would you believe they fit
perfectly? So I covered my
cabinet tops with tile like you
might use shelf paper.
Now, when I clean I just take
those tiles down and stack them on
thedrainboard.

HERE CO MB.
THE GUYS
hmbb Dear Dr. Stein crohn: We’ve been
VHHHHH married for seven yean and always
wanted a without luck until now
Perhaps it will interest some of your
IflBBH readers that I at last became pregnant
after reading a suggestion you made m
one of your columns In case you've
forgotten, I’ll remind you
JUlHH You advised that in cases similar to
oun, the husband have a sperm count,
and the wife have an examination by a gynecologist to m»s«
certain that ovaries, tubes and uterus were normal. Wall, wa
did. Everything was all right, and our doctors suggested that
we “Keep on trying and hoping.”
But here's what you added. You said you recalled quite a
few women, apparently unable to have • baby, who became
pregnant after they had their thyroid glands checked. If they
had low basal metabolic rates, then taking thyroid extract
somehow turned the entire gland setup around, and they
became pregnant within a few months
I had a protein bound iodine test. My thyroid rate was a
little lower than normal. My doctor prescribed thyroid extract.
Within three months I missed that period! Are we happy! If
it's a boy, his middle name will be Peter. Thanks ^ain and
again. — Mrs. W.
COMMENT: The term “deliriously happy” probably was
first used in describing an expectant mother like yourself. And
if your baby is a boy I’ll be especially flattered to be part of
the celebration.
Why and how thyroid extract helps fertility is difficult to
explain. It has also occasionally seemed to help women whoee
thyroid was not underactive.
But I think it’s important to stress that it doeoi't invariably
work. It’s Just something to consider — and not be too
hopeful.
MEDICALETTES (Replies To Readers)
Dear Dr. Stein crohn: I am healthy except that I’ve been
complaining for the past six months — almost without letup —
of numbness in my right lower arm and Angers. Nothing seems
to help. My wife keeps after me to see our doctor, but IH feel
silly taking up his time with ■ healthy huk like me. What do
you think? - Mr. T.
COMMENT: I’ll help along with the nagging. You’re ally
not to go.
I think of three pomibilities that have to be explored which
might causa your symptoms. There may be others, but hers
they are:
1 — Do you have cervical (neck) arthritis that may be
pressing on a nerve?
2 — Do you have an accessory cervical rib or a muscle
tightly constricting a large nerve?
3 — Do you have “carpal tunnel syndrome” far which them
is abnormal pressure on the nerve branches as they paes
through the wrist?
As you can sae, proper diagnods Is essential Proper
treatment win follow. Meanwhile, get over the absurd notion
that you will be “silly" In presenting yourself to your doctor.
It’s dumb to be numb — unnecemarily.
Besides, as I point out in my booklet, "When To See You
Doctor," every doctor would rather put out the match-flame
of disease than a three-alarm conflagration. Perhaps reading
the booklet might change your whole perspective. If you
would like a copy, write me at this paper endoafatg 35 cents
