—Our Walton correspondent as will
be observed by a perusal of his letter,
is opposed to the erection of a 175,000.

significant.
—In the card of Prof. F. M. Chan-

have resil "per session.” Patrons,
please take notice.

young people of Canton.
—Send tho Telephone to your
friends in the old country. They will
appreciate it, while the cost to you for
thus favoring them for an entire year
will only he one dollar.
—Now is the time to ornament your
yards by planting shade trees and
ahrubbery. Nothing conduces more
to the looks of a town, or the comfort
of its inhabitants, perhaps, than shade
trees.
—The farming interest in this vi-
cinity is greatly on the increase, if the
breaking of new land, the enlargmenl
of old fielda, and the building of new
fences are to be considered as signs of
the times.
—“Citizen” in to-days' issue of this
paper writes quite a lengthy article op-
posingjlhe building u'fine Court House
for Van Zandt county. Uncertainly
must be an “Old Fogy” kind of a
“citizen.” A 10c taxcan be levied end
ihe house built and one wouldnt kno’
the difference—and thus be the up
building of Canton and Van Zandt.
The structure would not only be an
honor to Canton,* but to the whole
county. Mr. "Citizen ’ has some very
peculiar ideas regarding the matter.
We judge him to be off of his “base.”
—Capt. J. T. Hamm, Ex-Sheriff of
this county and now acitizen of Wills
Point, while in the city Monday paid
his respects to the Telephone office.
He informed ua that Ross was ahead
for Governor in hia town. The Capt.
stirs and mingles among tho bovs—
and has a good opportunity of finding
out who is the head man. Ross holds
his own here, too, we are inclined to
believe. At present, the race seems
to be between Rosa and Bwain. Ei-
ther is good enough for us.
—From Dr. J. F. McCarty, one of
Cantona’ beat posted physicians and
high minded citizens we learn that he
will leave one day next week for Dub-
lin, Erath county. We join his many
friends in sorrow and regret on his de-
parture. By close application, ener-
gy, and perseverance ho lias eminent-
ly qualified himself for his profession,
and has reached the last round of the
ladder. He has built upalnrgeand
paying practice in Canton and sur-
rounding communities. We wish for
him in his new selection, all the suc-
cess he justly deserves Wo recom-

The Republicans of the Senate deter-
mined long since to make as much

advantage within their reach to per-
plex and annoy the Administration.
They assume this course to be a po-

sionsofgood will towards the Preai
dent ana his administration.
Senator Edmunds proposes to begin
the fight by offering his resolution
calling upon the President to furnish
information regarding the cases of
removal of federal officials and his
reasons for the same. The Democrat-
ic Senator* are united and harmonious
and will support Jfr. Cleveland. They
are getting ready for th* discussion by
holdingcanciises and the Republicans
are doing likewise.
There is no more bitter partisan in
the Menate than chiftiun Edmunds, of
Vermont. He is the arch enemy of
the Democratic party, and lie shaped
this little game while profession* great
admiration for the President's good
intentions and an anxious desire for
his success. He took pains to call at
the White House at the time of Vice-
President Hendricks’death and affec-
ted good will towards Mr. Cleveland
by urging him not to attend the fu-
neral at indinnapolis. Mr Edmunda
believes more in strategy than in vio-
lence, and be haa laid his plan for
entrapping the President very utfully.
He would like ubove all things tocon-
vict Mr. Cleveland inconsistency ns a
Civil Service Reformerand to trip the
Administration.
President Cleveland’s future course
in the matter cannot beoutlined. He
lias expressed his willingness to fur-
nish tiie Senate with all the papers on
files in the Departments bearing upon
his appointments and such document*
have been sent. But whether or not
he will agree to Mr. Edmunds’ pro-
posed during remains to be seei . He
may be relied upon for knowing his
riglits^under the Constriction, and
also die application of tiie Civil Ten-
ure law to his appointments. He is
not apt to lie discourteous to the Re-
publican majority in the State, but lie
isapt to maintain the authority of tiie
Executive. T he Senate may resent
aii TrcfinaHtrinrrrnni*- n*nft“lla urf
inuval, but it can only leject lionmlfc
tions, or lay them over indefinitely.
The Senate has again been debating
.the old Electoral Count problaui.
Senator Sherman went at length into
the issue involved, opposing all other
plans and offering one of his own, to
the effect that if the two Houses uis-
agree, they shall meet ill joint conveti-
(i n and elect a Pr sident. Ollier Pi s-

Mr. Edito. *"Va" 10X Tei.ephoNK.
Dear sir: Hoping you will give me
spare in your most valuable paper—
The Telephone, I will try togiveyou
a few locals from these parts:
rimes are very good, and helth
still better Hogs and cattle are dy-
ing in this section; prospect* for
meat to be very high. We think it
high time that Walnut Ridge was get-
ting on his supplies for the poor farm,
if there is money enough in the treas-
ury, if not lie bad better tax the people
15 cents more and buy it—or as be
says "stand in” with the Alliance.
How about that new court-house; the
Van Zandt Prospectus seems tQthink
11 $76,000.00 court-house would be de-
sirable—and would induce people of
finance to come in and settle up our
lands. We think if the thing w as
rightly looked into, that the decision
would be that keepeng up the noor
farm is enough for the people of Van
Zandt county to do for awhilo at least
’till it goes down and is sold at half
what it cost—and then would be time
to tax the people. They would then
have half the money already donated.
We are tired of special taxes to pay
for court houses and poor farms—and
I feel assured that people of Gods’ elect
will have more money, and poor farm’s
than to tax them to death. A* we all
know the county commissioners are
four of Gods’ elects, they will not favor
such thing. So Mr, "Prospectus” will
have to take down his sigbn. One of
Waltons’ best citizens—Mr. W. M.
Carmichael has left ns. He has
