KEITH GUTHRIE A NOTED LOCAL WRITER, autographs his new book, Texas Forgotten
Ports for Bee Vans, a Progress newspaper employee.
Keith Guthrie writes third volume on ports
Texas Forgotten Ports Vol.
3. by historian Keith Guthrie
Is off the press and on sale.
The newest book deals with
the multitude of river ports
on the Trinity. Neches.
Angella and Sabine rivers and
the cities like Orange,
Beaumont. Port Neches. Port
Arthur and Sabine Pass that
got their start from river boat
trade.
The first volume dealt with
ports from Corpus Christi to
Matagorda Bay and volume 2
gave life to the river boats on
the Rio Grande. Brazos, and
Red Rivers, port of Jefferson
and the Caddo Lake ports in
between and San Luis on the
Gulf.
River ports played a big
part In the development of
East Texas. Given a 10-foot
rise, a steam captain would
run his boat deep Into East
Texas If he knew 500 bales of
cotton were waiting at some
old port like Magnolia on the
Trinity River or Logan sport.
La., on the Sabine.
But the captains would also
risk low water to keep their
appointed rounds. This led a
veteran pilot, working his way
up the Trinity to hall a boy on
the shore, who was dipping a
pall of water out of the river:
“Put that water back In the
river...I may need It when 1
come fcfack down.”

When Winter Texans go
home, library circulation
drops, even with the Summer
Reading Club which encour-
ages children to read as many
as 32 books during a month.
The younger children are
readers. McCoy says. The
library loses them, and only

part of them return to read-
ing in high school.
To show circulation trends,
last September, check out
was down to 1,849 books. In
December, It had climbed to
2.085 and In January to
2.448.
For the library, the days of
the oil boom were the "Good
Old Days." In the seventies,
circulation topped 30,000
books a year.
McCoy remembers the
town was dynamic, compa-
nies and families moving In.
He said the harbor was so full
of boats servicing oil wells
that they were out numbering
shrimp boats.
Then came the oil field
crash, companies, people and
boats moved out and circula-
tion at the library hit new
lows. Now It Is back up again
to about 25,000.
