By JACK L. WHITE
County Extension Agent-AG
I recall many years ago, a com-
ment that George Rice made. Mr.
Rice is now a retired County Exten-
sion Agent in Nacogdoches. He said,
“People in East Texas are
sometimes a little sensitive. If you
think there is a flea problem, don’t
ask them if they have fleas. Ask
them if they have a dog. If they have
a dog, you know good and well they
have fleas.”
I think he was right in many ways,
but today I want to talk about fleas.
We are currently experiencing a
major flea problem in East Texas.
With a mild winter and current
climatic conditions people are ex-
periencing fleas both inside and out-
side the homes regardless if they
have a dog.
A little background on fleas may
help us understand how to control
them. A female flea may lay several
hundred eggs during her life. These
eggs are generally laid in the dirt,
bedding or on the host. The eggs hat-
ch in 2-3 weeks into larvae. This
stage will last 9-15 days but could be
up to 200 days. The pupal stage is
characterized by a white cocoon in
which to pupate. This stage may
last 7 days to 1 year. They emerge :n
the adult stage that may exist for 30-
75 days.
Fleas will feed on pets or humans.
The later causing irritating bites
and may pose health problems. Bite
problems may also cause
additional nrohlpms if the person !S
allergic to fleas.

Successful flea control requires
treatment both inside and outside
the home.
Insecticides containing carbaryl,
dichlorvos, pyrethrin, rotenone,
malathion, methoxychlor or
propoxur are labeled for use on
animals.
These products should be rubbed
in so that skin contact is achieved.
Pay particular attention to the area
between the ears, between the legs,
and around the tail.
Areas under and around the house
should be used to control flea
populations. This is essential to
prevent reinfestation of the pet or
the home.
Control in the home begins with
thorough cleaning. A vacuum
cleaner should be used to clean car-
pets, rugs, cracks and crevices,
around baseboards, and under fur-
niture. Always dispose of the
sweepings immediately to prevent
escape.
A coarse spray of chlorpyrifos,
pyretherins, resmethrin, ronnel,
dichlorvos, or malathion may then
be applied. Retreatment in 3-6
weeks will be necessary to kill fleas
that had not hatched at the time of
treatment.

July 15 deadline
set for heritage awards
July 15 is the deadline for having
applications for the 1987 Family
Land Heritage Awards on file with
the Texas Department of
Agriculture in Austin, eligible farm
and ranch owners were reminded
today by the Cherokee County
Historical Commission, which is
promoting participation in this
county.
Owners of farms or ranches which
have been in the same family 100 or
more years and in constant produc-
tion are eligible for the awards.
Farms or ranches which have been
leased or rented to persons outside
the owner families are not eligible
for the awards.
Applications have been taken for
entering the competition this year
by owners of six farms and ranches,
according to historical commission
records.
Applications must prove owner-
ship of the land 100 or more years by
the same family, uninterrupted
production from the land for the
same period, and must live on the
land or manage daily operation of
the farm or ranch. Agricultural
production from the land is defined
as $250 or more a year if the holding
is less than 10 acres or $50 sales if the
land is more than 10 acres insize.
Application forms for the 1987
awards are available from the
Cherokee County Historical Com-
mission in Room 200-B of the
Jacksonville post office building, the
commission’s headquarters.
There is no fee for applying for the
heritage award, explains John Allen
Templeton, commission chairman.
Those selected for the award will be
recognized at a public ceremony by
the Texas Department uf
Agriculture in Austin in the fall.

WHAT IS A
SPHYGMOMANOMETER?
Hi
It is a device that is used to measure your blood
pressure. First, a cuff with a rubber tube is wrapped
around your arm and the tube is inflated to constrict
the flow of blood.
Then a stethoscope is placed on the inside crook of
your arm and the pressure is slowly released. At the
first beat heard, a reading; is taken on the dial attached
to the cuff, this is the high point. Another reading is
taken at the last beat heard and this is the low point,
your physician then interprets the two readings to
determine whether your blood pressure is normal.
