—PEFLECTIONS-
FHA - HERO Attends Area
Helping youth assume their
roles in society through home
economics education is the
goal of all that are involved in
FHA—HERO. These students
work in these nation-wide
clubs to help strengthen
personal growth, family life,
and vocational preparation.

The Weatherfrod Forensic
League has continued to work
up the ladder of acheivement
until they have reached the
top steps.
Recently WFL attended a
competition at Tarrent County
Junior College and received
the excellent result of first
place. They now have three
consecutive first place
sweepstakes trophies.
“Encounter” is a program
used in guiding members
through FHA. I t involves the
home, school, community and
preparation for the road to
adulthood.
Recently members form
FHAI, FHAII, and HERO
went to Area Convention on
Entering competition at
TCJC, Weatherford gave their
best efforts against eleven
other schools. This resulted in
many individuals placing in
each event.
In Debate, the duet of Rob
Robertson and Dwayne Able
placed third. Receiving first
place was Hillary Marsh and
Laura Robinson. Laura also
won the best debator trophy
honor.
March 7 and 8 at Abilene Civic
Center.
The Weatherford FHAI
members represented were
Eddie Williams (local
president) as a voting
delegate.The purpose for the
voting . delegates is to in-
terview and vote on the new
Shane Pilgrim placed third
in Prose and Zan Bowlin
placed fifth. In Poetry
Reading, Leslie Gill placed
fourth.
“Chapter Two” won first
place. It was presented by the
duet consisting of Marleigh
Logan and Cindy Dunn.
The WFL will be entering
the District Competition on
March 29.
officers candidates. (Alson
attending from FHAI were:
Alecia Durham and Melissa
Bonner). Mrs. Bennie Barnett
is the FHAI sponsor.
Rhonda King went
representing FHAII as an
office candidate. She returned
to Weatherford holding the
office of Vice-president in
charge of Programs. Rhonda
will go to workshops to help
plan next year’s activities. In
July she will attend the
National £2£^efifion in St.
Louis for Area and State of-
fices.
Becky McBrayer also went
for FHAII as a voting
delegate.She did have the
opportunity to vote for
Rhonda.
Outstanding Area Chapter
Project Awards went to Caron
Kinser, Vicki Stewart, and
Susan Walls. Mrs. Wanda
Brain is the sponsor for FHA
II.
The HERO Chapter chose
Yvonne Brown and Kathy
Carter to be represented as
voting delegates. Several
other members also went to
present a short narration of
skits about famous comedians
of the 40’s. Kalynne Jones
portrayed Jack Benny,
Shannon Knipe played
Rochester; Joe DePute-
Groucho Marx, and Lisa
Parks- Harpo. Lisa also did a
pantomime as RED Skeleton.
Debra Grimes- Chico; Rhona
Crabbe- narrator, and Becky
Bowen- Harpo’s partner. Mrs.
Ann Pridemore is the sponsor
for HERO.
The HECE will be giving a
Skate-, athon on March 29
for six hours at Roller Land
West. The proceeds will be
donated to the American
Cancer Society
UIFL fTlokes Third Sweepstakes
VICA Competes At District
Students from Auto
Mechanics, Building Trades,
Millwork-Cabinet,
Cosmetology, Drafting,
Industrial Cooperative
Training, and Metal Trades
attended the District VICA
Competition held at Arlington
Sam Houston High School,
Friday and Saturday, March
14-15.
Carol Gardener, a junior
and 1st year Cosmetology
student was elected to serve
as District II Vice President
for 1980-81. In the nine years
that Weatherford has par-
ticipated in VICA, this is the
first time that a Weatherford
student has been elected to
hold a district office.
In the speed-skill contest,
students perform operations
or jobs for which they are
trained and compete against
other students from the
district. First, second, and
third, place winners are
eligible to advance to state
contest. Building trades
student Ronnie Lessig
received a second place and
Randy Curtis recieved a third
place in Dry Wall Applicator
Contest. Drafting students
Laurie Sizemore received a
first place and Jana Terry
received a second place in the
Architectural Drafting
Contest. Metal Trades
students Tracy Brown placed
third in Welding Contest and
Danny Reidel placed fourth
Machinist Contest.
In the individual projects
division, each project is
graded separately and first
place projects are eligible to
advance to state contest. Auto
Mechanics student Brad King
received a first place rating
and Brett Shumway received
a excellent rating. Carol
Surginer and Gerald Bieless
Good ratings. Millwork-
Cabinet students Jon Barnett
received a first place rating
and Charles Cundiff received
and excellent rating.
Cosmetology student Denise
Faulks received a first place
rating and Cathy Posey
received an excellent rating.
First place projects by
drafting students were Perry
Bornholdt, Curtis Carter,
Donna Jennings, Alan Looney,
and Laurie Sizemore.
Excellent ratings were
received by Donna Baxter,
Curtis Carter, Teresa Pena,
and Jana Terry. Industrial
Training student Sara Picard
received an Honorable
mention on her project. First
place proiects by. Metal
Trades students were Tracy
Brown, Terry Benton Mike
Decker, Terry Downs, Danny
Johnson, Danny Reidel, and
Craig Stokes. An Excellent
rating was received by Goerge
Hakell and Randy Feguson
received a good rating.
In the Leadership Contest,
the officers of Cosmetology
Club entered the Opening and
Closing Ceremonies Contest.
Cosmetology entered their
scrapbook in the Outstanding
Club Contest and received an
Honorable mention. Industrial
Cooperative Training
studentMelodee Stone placed
second in district in the
Prepared Speech Contest.
OEA Places At Competition

OEA and VOE are often
confused as being one in the
same. Office Education
Association (OEA) is the club
that students in Vocational
Office Education (VOE) class
are members of.
Office skills are not included
in UIL; therefore, OEA has
their own nation wide com-
petition. OEA students from
Weatherford High School
competed in Regionals Friday
February 20 at Tarrent
County Junior College.
Sharron McCulloch, senior,
captured first place in
Informative Verbal Com-
munications II. Her topic
being duties of an office
employee, Sharon’s speech
lasted the maximum seven
minutes
Peggy Gardner, junior,
achieved first in General
Clerical which includes
typing, memos, reports, etc.
Becky Newsome, junior,
received a second in General
Clerical. Kim Matlock, senior,
received second place in Job
Interview by completing a
detailed resume’, filling out a
thorough application, and
being interviewed for a
clerical job. Cara Saari
placed second in Extem-
poraneous Speaking Level I.
Cara was given a topic,
prepared in ten minutes, and
gave two five minute speeches
on the subject. Velvet Reibe
captured fourth in Infor-
mations Communications I.
In the research division,
Kim Matlock placed 6th and
Becky Newsome placed 3rd in
perparing manuals about jobs
in specific companies, ^varon,
Becky, Peggy, Kim, ana Cara
will travel to Dallas, March
20-22 to compete Statewide.
The top three winners of each
catgory will then go to
Nationals in Minneapolos,
Minn.
