Junior high squads split contests
The Levelland seventh, eighth
and ninth grade squads faced
Atkins and Frculiip junior high
teams this week, with local squads
winning two of the five matchups.
In games played during the
week, the seventh grade Red team
ued 6-6, while the While team lost
20-0 in games against Frenship
The eighth graders fared better,
with the Red team winning 20-0
over Frenship The White team
also won a 26^-12 tally against their
Wolfforth counterparts
In ninth grade action, the local
squads took it on the chin, as the
Red team fell 20-14, with the
White team winding up on the end
of 34-6 deficit.
In another contest held last
Saturday, the seventh grade Scarlet
and Black teams battled to a 04) tie
an in intrasquad contest at Lobo
Stadium. The teams played their
fust game of the season after the
seventh grade was divided into
four teams, according to coach
Mike McCann.
“We did this so all the players
could get some quality playing
time, and get more experience,” he
said. "We have about 127 kids out
for football this year, and we want
all of them to get the chance to
play."
'The scarlet and black teams
played hard the whole game," the
coach said.
In other seventh grade action,
the Red squad utilized a six-yard
run from Marlon Franklin to tie
Frenship 6-6, with Levelland
leading 5-3 in penetrations.
"Frenship was bigger than us all
the way around, and I'm really
proud of the way our kids hustled,"
McCann said.
Frenship scored on the first play
of the game on a long run. After
that, however, the defenses took
control of the game.
The White team lost 20-0 in a
game that McCann stated was
caused by a simple lack of effort.
"The kids played hard, they just
didn't d it the whole game They
need to leam that you can't let up at
all. Overall, though, we had a real
good workout today (Thursday),
and I’m sure we’ll be ready for the
next games against Hereford," he
said.
The eighth grade Red team
jumped out to a 14-0 halftime lead
en route to their win. Tailback
Scdric King began the scoring with
a four-yard sweep to the left The
two-point conversion failed, and
Levelland led 6-0
The Lobos scored again in the
second quarter when King con-
nected with Hector Coronado on a
halfback pass, good for 60 yards
and the score. A Doug Husen run
from two yards out made the score
14-0 at halfume
The squad scored once again m
the third quarter when King ran
around the end for 40 yards and the
score. The conversion failed,
making the final score 20-0.
"This was a good win for us,"
staled coach Rodney Caddell "The
kids showed us a lot Thursday.
They carried their intensity over
from defense to offense, and that
helped a great deal. It was a good
team effort"
The squad ran their record to 3-3
with the win.
The eighth grade White leam
also came away with an exciting
win. After Levelland collected a
safety against Frenship due to a
bad snap out of the end zone.
James Mendoza got the offensive
scoring underway with a five-yard
run for the TD. Josh Alexander
added the two-point conversion
w ith a two-yard run. and Levelland
led 10-0 at halfume.
In the second half Levelland
gained scores on a 10-yard run
from Fabian Murillo and a two-
poini conversion bootleg pass from
quarterback Kip Humphreys to
Justin Alexander, making the score
18-12 in the third quarter.
Levelland iced the victory with
a 30-yard gallop from runningback
Jeff Pharis to make die score 24-
12 Another pass from Humphreys
to Alexander made the final tally
26-12.
"This was a fun game to watch."
stated coach Shawn Bearden.
"Everybody contributed, and thev
all played a hard-hitting game."
the leam stands at 2-1 with the
win.
The freshmen dropped both
contests, with the Red team nar-
rowly losing its contest. With 32
seconds left in the game. Chester
James ran back a kickoff return 65
yards for the trying score, but the
play was nullified due to a contro-
versial clipping penalty
"I’m really proud of the kids."
stated coach Kenny Pittman. "They
played hard, and we nearly came
away with the win."
the leam scored first on a pass
from Mitchel Cottenoir to Jason
Edwards. JOsh Malouf added the
two-point conversion to make the
score 8-0. Levelland scored again
in the second quarter on a six-yard
run through the middle to give
Levelland a 14-0 lead at the half.
The second half belonged to
Frenship. however, with the host
squad coming back for 20 points in
the final 16 minutes.
"Malouf had a good game for
us. as did a lot of other people."
Pittman said.
Malouf gained 109 yards fix the
game.
The White team held strong fix
three and a half quarters, but
Frenship exploded for 28 points
late in the t,ame
"The defense played hard the
whole game, but things just got
away from them in that last quar-
ter." stated coach Alan Ayers.
Levelland s lone score came on
a 20-yard pass to Jason Betterton
from Landon Barnes. The two-
point attempt was no good, and
Levelland fell to the Tigers.
The teams continue their sea-
sons this week with games against
Atkins, Hereford and Estacado
