NEWSLE TTE1R
ISSUED WEEKLY TO ALL SUPERVISORY PERSONNEL
29 July 1953
After good results for the first several weeks of our water conservation campaign, a danger
signal has appeared. Last week we used 19,212,225 gallons as compared with 18,821,175
gallons of the previous week--an increase of 391,050 gallons. Although our last week's
usage is less than the average weekly usage for the month of June (21,639,511. gallons), we
need to concentrate our efforts to reduce water consumption even further.
One possible cause for this week's increase is the failure to close in-take valves on rinse
tanks and other equipment that uses water at the end of the shift or when not in use. All
supervisors who are responsible for operating this equipment are urged to check and. insure
that every precaution is being taken to eliminate this waste of water.
A group of Turkish fliers, headed by Major Sabiha Gokcen, famed aviatrix who has seen com-
bat in Korea, will visit Convair Thursday. The fliers are in America under an exchange
program sponsored by the Civil Air Patrol and. USAF. Major Gokcen is the daughter-in-law
of the president of Turkey. The visitors will be accompanied here by Mrs. Jean Howard,
vice president of the '99s, the women's branch of the Civil Air Patrol.
Another plaque award to a B-36 wing for flying 1,000 hours in a single month will be pre-
sented Friday to the 6th Bomb Wing (H) at Walker Air Force Base, Roswell, New Mexico.
This is the fifth B-36 wing to reach the 1,000-hour goal. Others before it have been the
92nd at Fairchild AFB; 5th Reconnaissance at Travis AFB; the 7th at Carswell AFB; and
the 28th Reconnaissance at Rapid City AFB. Friday's presentation will be made by M. L.
Hicks, Assistant Division Manager. G. S. Green, Chief of Service Engineering, will accom-
pany Mr. Hicks to New Mexico for the presentation.
Several hundred persons are now employed at Convair's Fort Worth Division making tools and
parts for four different airplanes in production at the company's San Diego Division.
They are the Air Force F-102, supersonic delta wing interceptor; the T-29 "Flying Class-
room", Air Force navigator trainer; the C-131 "Samaritan", Air Force continental air
evacuation transport; and the Navy R3Y transport, production version of the XP5Y-l,
world's first turboprop seaplane.
It is with deep regret that we bid adieu this week to J. C. (Cliff) Felix, who has re-
signed as Division Controller to become controller for a West Coast aircraft manufacturer.
Mr. Felix' resignation brings to a close a long association with Convair which began in
1936 when he went to work at the San Diego. Division as an accountant. Since then he has
served as Chief Accountant, Assistant Treasurer, and Assistant Controller for the corpora-
tion, and as Division Controller at both San Diego and Fort Worth, as well as at Nashville.
