V~'me Four. S . TEXAS, 13M Y,193 At Anchor
Numbr Thrty-ne.San Pedro, Calif.WAR VETERANS TAX
EXEMPTION
THE Commander-in-Chief, U. S. Fleet
has published the following valuable in-
ormation, which is of some concern to
11 of us who own any kind of property.
This is a condensation of Admiral Leigh's
letter, but it contains all the necessary
items of information.
Any man who is a veteran of either the
Army, Navy or Marine Corps who re-
sides in Long Beach is exempted from
paying taxes on the first thousand dollars'
worth of property he owns. If he does
not own property to that amount in his
own name, his wife's propertysmay be in-
cluded up to that amount. This is the
California State Law.
The following is a summary of the
California Exemption law and the neces-
sary steps the applicant must take in
order to secure said exemption.
S The applicant for such exemption
Wnust have rendered honorable service in
the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, or Re-
venue Marine Service of the United
States in time of war.
He must be a legal resident of California.
The applicant and (or) his wife must not
own property of any kind either in this
State, or elsewhere, of the value of $5,
000.00, or more.
The term "Property" includes money,
notes, debentures, shares of capital stock,
bonds, solvent credits, deeds of trust,
mortgages, and any legal equitable in-
teest therein, dues, franchises, and all
other matters and things, real, personal,
and mixed, capable of private ownership.
Application must be made between the
fir t Monday in March and the first Mon-
day in July, each year, at Room 402, City
Hall, for exemption on property located
in the City of Long Beach.
(Continued on Page Two.)THE idea of Mother's Day originated wit iiss A fl inna Jarvis o
Philadelphia in the year 1907, and Philadelphia was the first city to
observe the day on May the tenth 1908. The idea was born in Miss
Jarvis' mind while she was arranging a memorial to her Mother in their
home town in Virginia, for during the planning of this affair, she con-
ceived of such a celebration on a nation wide scale. Her dream was realized when in 1914 a
resolution was introduced into Congress
to the effect that the President should
designate by annual proclamation the
second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.
Th's resolution was passed and so on May
9, 1914, Woodrow Wilson became the first
President to issue such a proclamation,
and called an all government buildings,
home, and other suitable places to display
the American flag on this day "as a pub-
lic expression of our love and reverence
for the mothers in our country."
Thus the United States became the first
nation in the world to accord patriotic
tribute to its mothers. The Mother's Day
International Association was organized
to promote and to protect the celebration
of Mothers' Day in this county and other
nations.
To-morrow is Mother's Day. The
Secretary of the Navy has called upon ourservice to observe the day in the follow-
ing words: "The men of the United
States Navy and Marine Corps should
appreciate the full significance of
Mother's Day and should join in the tri-
bute to their mothers. Where circum-
stances permit special services suitable to
the occasion may be held."
A special effort has been made on this
ship to plan church services of high orde
in keeping with the day. Well known
radio artists will provide the special
music, special programs are being prin-
ed, a Mother's Day Carnation will be pre-
sented to every person present, and a fine
service in honor of our mothers is planned.
Honor your mother to-morrow morning
by attending this service. Also write so
her on this day. She will be especially
grateful to know that you attended
church in her honor.M- q
