LONG BEACH SERVICE
MEN'S CLUB
The director of the Long Beach Ser-
vice Men's Club, Mrs. C. C. Cutchshaw,
has requested us to announce in the col-
umns of the STEER the present location
of the club. It is now located in the
basement of the Chamber of Commerce
Building, Ocean and Elm Avenue, and is
open every day from seven o'clock on.
Mrs. Cutchshaw says that three special
events are being planned for May. The
first is a Vesper Service to-morrow even-
ing, at 4:00. There will be music, re-
freshments, and an Open Forum conduct-
ed by Bruce Mason, President of the
Chamber of Commerce.
May 18th will be "Family Nite," spon-
sored by the Navy Wives, Club, with a
program by the Triangle Service League
of the San Pedro Army and Navy YMCA,
followed by a dance. There will be prizes
awarded to the largest family and to the
most recent bride present.
On May 26th a card party will be given
by the Girl's Auxilary of the Service
Club.
All men of this ship are cordially in-
vited to these affairs and also to make
use of the facilities of the Club at any
time while they are ashore in Long
Beach.
LEAVE AND TRANSFERS
Due to the large number of leave re-
quests being submitted daily it has been
necessary to establish the following pol-
icy regarding leave.
Prior to leaving for the Navy Yard on
Monday 29, May leave will be granted to
the Engineers force and "R" division for
short periods as these men will be re-
quired on board during the overhaul of
the ship in the Navy Yard.
(Continued on Page Four.)"R" DIVISION NOTES
Speed Murphy writes to his congress-
man, I think he wants a swap on the Okie.
Good luck, Speed.
Travis and Hubbard, ship-fitters' gig-
ilos, have jest invested in a Roll Ruff. I
wonder if the gi is are getting a break.
Ask Dollie.
McQueen, the "R" Division sportsman,
lost again on the races. Maybe he will
invest in the Y. M. C. A. It is safer.
Spick and Kelley are still making speed
runs. The weather and other conditions
made it impossible to carry on Saturday
night.
The stand by in the "R" Division isn't
so hot. Smith's, F., SF2c smiling face is
seen more often about the decks after
liberty call.
Sweed Harrnett is going ashore more
lately. Is it the Blond, Idell?
"R" Division's left hand monkey
wrench, Aske, is often seen at the Rain
Bow dance with Ashworth. They are
the division's dancing gigilos.
We have a newcomer in the "R" Divi-
sion. The name is Dimond, but not the
famous "Jack Dimond". "Good luck and
a pleasant cruise on the Good Ship
Te'as," says Speed.
TID BITS FROM "B" DIVISION
We wonder why Coose Neck Veto, alias
the Ship's Cafe gigilo, is getting so gray
headed these days. We recommend
more Vitalis and less thought of the
bonus bill.
EXTRA EXTRA
Bull Avery and Partner actually won a
game of pinochle.
* * * *
We wonder who is the Father Time f
the "B" Division, Bull Avery, "Scissors
Bill" Tracy, or the Patty's Market
Flash.
* * * *
"Don't call me Cardona, just say
Boilers".
* * * * *
We haven't heard Capps tell a lie in
two weeks.
* * * * *
We wonder if Wimpy Roberts and
Perth Deck Tisdale aren't related in some
way.

NEW STEER STAFF MEMBER
It is with regret that we announce the
departure from the STEER Staff of
Ensign H. T. Johnson. For over a year
Ensign Johnson has been a valued mem -
ber of the Staff and his literary effort
have been a real contribution to what-
ever success the STEER has achieved in
that time. We regret the loss of his
valuable services but the press of new
duties forced his hand. Reliable infor-
mation indicates that he will be the offi-
cial custodian of the sob locker upon de-
tachment of "Baron" Schrieber.
At the sa;se time we welcome to the
Staff in his place, Ensign N. M. Head,
himself a writer of no mean ability. He
has been writing from time to time f ,t
the STEER in an unofficial capacity, and
now we are glad to have him with us oJi-
cially.
WAR VETERANS TAX
EXEMPTION
(Continued from Page One.)
The applicant should also file a sepa-
rate claim with the County Assessor for
e-emption on property located either in
Long Beach or elsewhere in Los Angeles
County.
A branch of the County Assessor's
Office is maintained at 709 Jergins Trust
Building, Long Be-ch.
In order to determine a claimant's eli-
gibility for exemption we require pre-
sentation at our office of the applicant's
service record.
If the veteran owns real estate in the
City of Long Beach we also require pre-
sentation of his deed or contact thereto,
When the necessary data has once been
obtained from there documents the same
information is not required to be furnish-
ed again, as it is kept on file for future
