Local Fencers
Take Honors
In Area Event
The 1963-64 fencing season
ended on a high note for GD/-
FWRA participants in Amateur
Fencers League of America tour-
naments, Commissioner H u g h
Hodgins announced.
For the second consecutive year,
the Division Championship meet
of North Texas Division, AFLA,
was hosted by GD/FWRA Fenc-
ing Activity in the Fieldhouse.
"Five GD/FWRA fencers par-
ticipated in the day-long tourney,
which yielded honors for all,"
Hodgins said.
In the women's division, Louise
Watson placed fifth and Helen
Orr seventh.
In the men's division, Hugh
Hodgins placed fourth, Jim Orr
fifth, and Ted Vitek seventh. All
five were eligible for regional
and national championship tour-
naments.
Orr also won the AFLA sports-
manship medal for the year.
In other AFLA tournaments
during the year, Orr took two
second places, four third places
and one fourth place. Helen Orr
took two firsts; Vitek a fourth
place; and Helen Bohn a first
place.
"The fencing activity is grow-
ing," said Hodgins, "and plans
are now under way to obtain pro-
fessional instruction in advanced
fencing from a French fencing
master who recently arrived in
Dallas."
A new g r o u p of beginning
fencers is being formed for a
class in elementary foil at 7 p.m.
each Tuesday.
Those interested in joining a
fencing class may contact Hod-

Visit to Berlin I
OF Freeman's T
West Berlin is outwardly as
busy and prosperous as New York
City. East Berlin, by sharp con-
trast, is drab and for the most
part still war-scarred.
These impressions were stored
by J. D. Freeman, Dept. 22-2,
during a recent five-day visit to
Berlin, the "high point" of a
three-week vacation tour to Italy,
Spain and Germany.endar

rip Abroad
"By comparison to West Ger-
man shops, the stores on 'Stalin
Alley' had poor displays," Free-
man said. "And we heard a per-
sistent rumor that many of the
buildings had false fronts and
nothing inside."
The bus stopped in front of
East Germany's largest depart-
ment store, but the passengers
were warned not to enter the
store, Freeman said.
F r e e m a n said buildings for
three blocks behind the famed
Berlin Wall on the eastern side
had been razed along a 30-mile
front. "The area is called 'no-
man's land,"' he said, "and it is
mined."
Re-entering West Berlin, the
bus had to make six stops to navi-
gate the obstacle-dotted exit-
contrived to prevent cars from
ramming the check point.
Freeman said the Russian
driver and interpreter were polite
and informative. "Several pas-
sengers offered them tips," he
said, "but they had to refuse.
After all, tipping is 'capitalistic',
you know."
The trip was Freeman's second
overseas. Year before last he took
a three-week tour which included
the Scandanavian countries, Eng-
land, Switzerland and Bavaria.
Grimmet, Jackson
Knight Win Races
First place winners of recent
GD/FWRA Go Kart Races were
Steve Grimmett, Bucky Jackson,
and Ricky Knight.
David Martin and Jeff Harwell
shared second place and Phil Har-
well, Bill Raines, and R i c k y
Driggers came in third.
Jackson won the gate prize.
Next race is scheduled at 2
p.m. Aug. 2 at the GD/FWRA Go
Kart track.
Youngsters To Star
In Two W&M Plays
Wing and Masque's fourth an-
nual workshop got under way last
week when rehearsals began for
two one-act plays f e a t u r i n g
youngsters.
The plays, entitled "Zelda" and
"When Shakespeare's L a d i e s
Meet," are cast and directed by
young people.
Rehearsals for a third play,
with an adult cast, will begin this
week.
First lecture of the workshop is
scheduled at 7:30tonight by
Clarice Harris. Subject will be
"Costumes."BERLIN VISITOR.--J. D. Free-
man, Dept. 22-2, poses in front
of Russian memorial during brief
trip to East Berlin.
Freeman's views on East Ger-
many were garnered during an
English-sponsored, four-hour bus
trip. "A Russian crew-consisting
of driver and interpreter-took
over from the English crew at
Check-Point Charley at the Ber-
lin Wall," Freeman said.
The first two stops were "un-
eventful," a visit to a Russian
cemetery for fallen soldiers of the
Battle of Berlin, and a brief stop
at a souvenir shop. Then came a
drive down East Berlin's "Stalin
Alley," mile-long show case for
the sector.

mum of 150 and a maximum of
500 guests for a Fieldhouse res-
ervation, and a minimum of 50
