Lobos place at Andrews meet
LEVELLAND & HOCKLEY COUNTY NEWS-PRESS, Wednesday, March 1, 2000-7
A group of only 10 Levelland
powerlifters attended the meet in
Andrews this past Saturday. Several
of the top contenders had previous
commitments and were unable to
attend. The rugged group of Lobos
competed well and brought home a
third place. The top team at the
meet was Brown wood with
Monterey finishing in second place.
The Andrews meet was the
final meet to qualify fry the region
meet set for Saturday, Mar. 18
After all was said and done,
Levelland has 13 able-bodied young
men qualified for the region meet.
“The younger kids in the
smaller weight classes improved
their totals and won a spot (at the
region meet),” said Coach Jeff
Northern about the number of ath-
letes that qualified. “They all did
extremely well. If everybody lifts
well (at the meet), our chances are
good.”
% Out of the 13 qualifiers, four of
them are returning region qualifiers
from last year. Junior Craig Downs
moved from the 123 Class to the
132 Class. Senior Brandon Taylor
will compete in the 148 Class again
this year. Senior Abel Rodriguez
was not only a region qualifier but
a state qualifier as well last season
in the 148 Class. He has moved up
a weight class and will be compet-
ing in the 165 Class this year. Se-
nior Andrew Banda^was a region
and state qualifier last year in the
181 Class. He will head to the re-
gion meet in the 198 Class.
Joining the four experienced
region qualifiers will be Justin
Cook and Chris Flores in the 114
Class; Michael Lane and Jacob
Kiser in the 123 Class; Christian
Coronado in the 132 Class; Craig
Taylor in the 148 Class; Justin
Honesto in the 181 Class; Paul
Zamora*in the 275 Class; and Scotty
Mitchell in the Super Heavyweight
Class.
At the Andrews meet this past
Saturday, the Lobo lifters competed
against some schools they had not
had a chance to see yet.
“This meet gave us a chance to
see some kids we hadn’t seen yet,”
said Northern. “We had a good
meet. We were able to score well
without a lot of our big point scor-
ers.”
Scotty Mitchell placed first in
the SH W Class with a total of 1485
pounds. Brandon Taylor was sec-
ond in the 165 Class with a total of
1140. Justin Cook brought home a
