Affairs of the Association
At the 9:30 Saturday morning session papers were given by: Mrs.
Florence Johnson Scott, "Steamboats on the Rio Grande"; John O.
King, "Texas Petroleum Politics: The Myrick Bill and the Proposed
Texas-Gulf Merger of 1905"; and Wilson M. Hudson, "Andy Adams
and Texas."
At the second session of the morning the following persons read
papers: John L. Waller, "Rivalry Between A. J. Hamilton and E. J.
Davis for Leadership and Control of the Republican Party of Texas";
John E. Buser, "Why Texans Honored Grant in 188o"; and John C.
Rayburn, "The Election of 1881 Locating the University of Texas."
Dorman H. Winfrey delivered the luncheon address, "Arturo Tos-
canini in Texas: The 1950 NBC Symphony Orchestra Tour."
The annual meeting concluded with the Phi Alpha Theta program,
held in the J. Frank Dobie Room of the Academic Center on the
University of Texas campus. The session included papers by John
Carrier, "The Collapse of Constitutional Government in Texas, 1866-
1867"; James B. Storey, "J. Frank Norris and the Election of 1928 in
Texas"; and Frank R. Prassel, "An Historical Appraisal of the Texas
No-Retreat Rule."
JUNIOR HISTORIAN MEETING
The Junior Historians held their annual meeting on April 29,
1967, at Townes Hall Auditorium on the University of Texas campus.
At the Friday morning session papers were read by: Clint Forrest,
"Two Ghosts Along the Brazos"; Kathleen O'Neill, "The John Staf-
ford Home, Colorado County, Texas"; Billy Christopher, "A Biogra-
phy of Joseph William Gardner: Indian Fighter and Pioneer of South-
west Texas"; Betsy Ross, "Don Juan Pedro Walker, the Unsung Map-
maker"; Gary Leseman, "Fort Davis"; Fernie R. Aceves, "The His-
torical Meeting of Two Nations' Presidents at the United States and
Mexico Border"; and Ell Phelps, "Historic Landmarks of the Bay-
town Area."
At the luncheon held in the Regency Room of the Villa Capri
restaurant, your director was the principal speaker. The first place
Leslie Waggener Memorial Award was presented to Joe Hammer for
his prize winning essay, "Schlarafenland Gruene, Texas." Dorman H.
Winfrey presented the H. Bailey Carroll Memorial Award to Mickey
Lynn McClure for his essay, "Old Chisholm Trail Relived."
The meeting was concluded with a tour of Austin.155
