Handbook of Texas
In the acknowledgments to his best-selling historical novel Texas,
James A. Michener had some very kind words to say about the Hand-
book of Texas: "Any writer on Texas finds himself indebted to the Hand-
book of Texas, a unique three-volume encyclopedia. A treasure trove of
historical research, it is now undergoing a monumental expansion to
six large volumes that will require ten years of work. It will then be in-
dispensable to any serious student of Texas and will have no equal in
any other state." Mr. Michener has served on the Handbook's editorial
advisory board since 1982. At that time he noted that the Handbook was
a source that had been most helpful in his research: "It is a remarkable
accomplishment, the only one of its kind in America. I consult the book
almost every day. Some of its entries are intolerably out of date . .. and
I am very glad to hear that a revision is underway."
That revision is indeed underway with the help of twenty-one co-
sponsoring institutions, an advisory board of over fifty leading authori-
ties on Texas, and thousands of authors from across the country and
abroad. The dedicated Handbook staff at the Association's office and
around the state is a remarkable group.
Tom Cutrer, managing editor of the Handbook, has put together a
fine team of scholars. Senior Editor Roy Barkley, head of copyediting,
and Associate Editor Paul Cecil, in charge of data management, are im-
portant parts of this team. In Austin, Associate Editor Douglas Barnett
capably supervises two Senior Research Assistants, Pat Duncan and Ann
Graham, and nine Research Assistants: Dan Greene, Jim Greene, Judy
McArthur, Paula Marks, John Minton, Mary Ogilvie, Alice Rhoades,
Nolan Thompson, and Karen Yancy. A number of institutional cospon-
sors provide support for these RAs. The Texas Foundation for Women's
Resources, for instance, funds the position held by Judy McArthur,
who is researching and writing entries on women's topics. Prairie View
A&M University, a new cosponsor, supports Nolan Thompson, whose
Handbook work covers black history and culture. Southwest Texas State
University supports Karen Yancy, and the Catholic Bishops Fund has fi-
nanced positions for work on Catholic history. The Price Daniel Scholar-
