The Association is sponsoring a two-day conference on "The Black
Experience in Texas," which will be held in Austin, October 3-4, 1986.
The conference will consider all aspects of the black experience in this
region. Through lectures, audience participation, and workshops, the
conference will focus on a number of related questions: How can we
expand our understanding of black life in Texas? What topics, themes,
and ideas related to black culture do we need to include in a compre-
hensive survey of Texas? This meeting will be the latest in a series of
Handbook of Texas meetings that are designed to focus attention on top-
ics that were not given the thorough treatment they deserved in the
1952 edition of the Handbook. "The Black Experience in Texas" will
provide an opportunity for all interested people, scholars and lay per-
sons alike, to contribute their ideas to the new six-volume Handbook of
Texas, which we will be publishing in 1996. One of the most important
aspects of the conference will be the workshop sessions Saturday morn-
ing, where all conference participants will join small groups led by con-
ference speakers. Each group will identify and discuss topics relating to
black life that it feels should be treated in the new Handbook. It is our
goal to have an entry on every significant aspect of black culture in this
new edition. We strongly encourage participation in the conference
and the workshops so that we can take advantage of your knowledge
and ensure that all important topics dealing with black life in Texas are
covered. How future generations understand the black experience in
Texas will be determined to some extent by how the topic is covered in
the new Handbook. Come to the conference next October 3-4 and help
make sure that the coverage is as comprehensive, accurate, and thor-
ough as possible.
