A farm at your
fingertips!
More food within easy reach in this big new
RCA WHIRLPOOL
FREEZER!
that guards the peak of flavor
This little beauty holds more than a quarter-ton of food
—and all of it reachable! You don’t need to stand on your
head to put in food or get it out.
What’s more, it stores all the flavor. Foods you freeze
now will taste the same months later. Flavor doesn’t
change in an RCA WHIRLPOOL freezer because the tem-
perature doesn’t vary more than 2°.
Start now to buy ahead . . . bake ahead ... keep a farm
right in your kitchen. You’ll save big money by buying
in quantity, in season. You’ll save enough to
pay for this new RCA WHIRLPOOL, now only

DATA-COLLECTING instrument
canisters are checked by a tech-
nician before they are dropped
by parachute from a B-36 sec-
onds prior to the actual H-bomb
drop during Operation Redwing.
Blast effects information from
such equipment is valuable to
civil defense in planning means
of protection against atomic or
hydrogen war. (JOTI Photo)
H-bomb Tests
Vital to CD
The sky momentarily lights
with the brilliance of a hundred
suns, and then, within seconds,
returns to the more subdued
hues of a tropical dawn.
Another Hydrogen bomb test.
More specifically, Operation Red-
wing, Cherokee shot.
* * *
AS THE PYROTECHNICS die
away, there begins the real work
of checking instruments, analyz-
ing data, comparing Cherokee
with former tests. Scientists in
concrete bunkers only 20 miles
from Ground Zero quickly be-
gin to read their instruments.
Planes, ships and rockets check
the intensity of radioactive fall-
out and other effects of the blast.
Aboard a ship, the USS Mt.
McKinley, about 37 miles
from the blast, a party of
Federal Civil Defense Admin-
istration observers remove !
their dark goggles. They, and
others like them, must pa-
tiently wait for the scientists.
But they know that when the
scientists have toted up the
score, it will fall to them to re-
fine existing techniques of popu-
lation evacuation and shelter—•
perhaps devise new ones — to
assure survival of the greatest
number of persons if some day
an American sky lights up like
a hundred suns. u
