WILL LEVELLAND BE THE
SCENE OF THE NEXT EPIDEMIC?
Let’s Clean Up Our Town And Keep It Clean
ACTION MUST BE TAKEN NOW—---
The dread disease of Poliomyelitis is reach ing epidemic proportions in the state of Texas. Cases
as close as Brownfield and Lubbock have already been reported and several children from vari-
ous localities of the state have died. In view of the likelihood of an outbreak of polio or some
other disease in Levelland, the city commission deems it necessary that residents take immediate
action to clean up the town and keep it clean.
DO NOT KEEP LIVESTOCK IN TOWN--
Of utmost importance to a city-wide drive to prevent the spread of any disease is the necessity of removing
all livestock from the city limits. Chicken pens, cow pens, hog pens or any other type pens housing animals
or poultry are a menace to public health and sources of fly-breeding. Your health officials request that these
be eliminated immediately. For the sake of your health, your children’s health, your neighbor’s health do not
keep livestock or poultry within the city limits.
SAFETY MEASURES ARE A NECESSITY----------—
Garbage barrels are available at cost. Place your order at City Hall or Hockley County Board of Development
for a barrel with your initials on it. Phone 85J or 194. The cost is $2.75 delivered. Keep these or other garbage
containers covered and on a platform if possible. Milk should be from approved sources, pasteurized, and from
TB and Bangs tested cows. Exterminate rats and mice and their harborage. All mosquitoes and mosquito-
breeding places should be eliminated. Wash hands thoroughly before eating and observe scrupulous cleanliness
of the person and clothing. Remove all weeds, trash, cans and bottles from your premises and the vacant lots
around you.
ELIMINATE FLY-BREEDING PLACES---------------------
Chief carrier of polio, typhoid and other disease germs is the common house fly. Eliminate them by the use
of DDT or some other satisfactory spray and to eliminate their source, eliminate their breeding places. It is
absolutely necessary that all out-door toilets be made fly-proof and sanitary. Waste matter should be buried or
hauled away. Dishwater or garbage of any kind should not be thrown on the ground. To do so is a sure way
of drawing flies . . . and again, hogs, cows and chickens must be eliminated from the city limits.
CO OPERATION OF EVERYONE REQUESTED------------
The citizens of Levelland, in their determined effort to c lean up the town and to keep it clean, have the co-oper-
ation of the civic clubs, the many women’s clubs, the Hockley County Board of Development, the Junior Cham-
ber of Commerce and other organizations. Won’t YOU do your part? Levelland could soon experience a near
flyless, germ-free city if everyone does his part in his own house and yard, his store or market. Soon a city-wide
clean-up day will be designated. All stores will close for a day and everyone is requested to take part in the
drive. In the meantime, you as a resident of Levelland, are requested by your commission to “get your house
in order,” to perform your duty as a patriotic citizen, to join your neighbor in a battle against disease. By do-
ing so, you may prevent someone going through life a cripple . . . you may prevent death. The least your re-
ward can be is the pride that comes from living in a clean town.
INSPECTORS WILL BE NAMED TO THOROUGH LY INSPECT THE BUSINESS SECTION AS WELL
AS THE RESIDENTIAL AREA.
WILL YOUR CHILD BE
POLIO’S NEXT VICTIM?
