(Out of the Long Ago)
By Rev. H. W. Knickerbocker
On an old dead peach tree, gnarled
and rough and ugly, that stands at my
southern window, grows a honey-
suckle vine. In its younger days the
old tree bent low with luscious fruit,
whose soft cheeks were mantled with
rosy blushes by the kisses of the sun;
but now the sap is dry, the life is
gone, and not a single pink blossom
responds to the tenderest caresses of
spring. Then cut it down, you say,
why cumbereth it the ground" Not
so, not so.. Would you blot out the
memory of the strong and useful hu-
man life upon which posterity climbs
and clings because that posterity
bears not fruit but flowers? Verily,
humanity needeth both the flowers
and the fruit, and so I’ll cherish my
old tree, though its day of fruit has
gone, for it supports this clinging vine
that is always filled with Dowers. To
me it is now more beautiful than ever,
and tells a sweeter story. It comes
like a visitor from the land where
dwells the breath of morning, the mid-
night silence of the forest and the
fading light of evening from the en-
circling horizon of the emotions, and
speaks to the heart in its own lan-

County Agent Singleton js receiv-
ing many congratulations since his
retqrn from A. & M. College, where
the annua! Farmers Short Course was
held this month. Mr. Singletqn was
the winner over all county agents in
Texas in live stock and poultry judg-
ing, also the winner over all on agri,
cultural products. His district won
first also on district judging. This is
quite n distinction when mere were
one hundred and sixty county agents
from that many counties in Texas
competing.
The following letter was received
by Mr. Singleton from, A. & M. Col-
lege, advising him of the honors won:
“Permit me to congratulate you gv
being the winning agent in the state
this year, as well as being winning
agent on- lire stock and ppultry. This
is quite a distinction, and I should
have considered it a very great, hon-
or had you wop only one place, instead
of two. I do not recall buy agent in
the past having won two of the high-
est places in these contests. Again
congratulating you on this high honor
that you have brought to Fannin
County and to this district, and with
highest regards, (signed) J. E. Stan-

Japan is the latest country
to become exercised over the
cost of intoxicating liquors.
She has found that the peo-
fde spend nearly as much
qr strong drink each year
as it costs under present un-
usual conditions to run the
government. Having suffered
from the worst national dis-
aster. in the history of na-
tions in the great earthquake
not many months ago, Japan
needs every dollar she tan
save, and tne needless waste
of money for liquor is caus-
ing some anxhty in govern-
ment circles. Japan may also
take a notion some time soon
to put a ban on liquor.
