Baby shower for Jesus
Students in the Kindergarten class are shown with some of the items
collected to give to babies and toddlers in need through the Mid Coast
Family Services, formerly the Women s Crisis Center in Victoria. Baby
gifts will also be given to the Child Study Clinic that services 650 fami-
lies in eight counties including DeWitt and Lavaca.
The Progressive Study Club gathered for their annual Christ-
mas party at the residence of Dorothy Mgebroff whose home was
beautifully decorated for the holiday season. In addition to
Mgebroff, the club social committee composed of Jo Plume,
Dolores Sengelmann, Archie Mercer and Happy Schmittgens
hosted the delightful event.
The festive evening began with a social time followed with a
meaningful devotional by Happy Schmittgens. She read a poem
by Helen Steiner Rice with the central theme of blessings. The
poem imparted the message to keep Christmas strong in the heart
through unselfish giving. Schmittgens then read selections from
the book, Children's Letters to God. The book consisted of three
segments, the first being humorous letters to God by children; the
second section dealt with complaints and wishes; and the third
portion centered around approvals, confidences and thanks.
The members then feasted on an evening meal consisting of an
assortment of favorite food items prepared by each of the mem-
bers. These food dishes were traditions served in the members'
individual families at Christmas-time.
After the meal, each member answered roll by recalling a nos-
talgic event special to her as a youngster in family or school. The
membership was then amused as Dolores Sengelmann read a
charming poem about Christmas, Texas style.
The evening highlight was the exchange of handmade gifts
among the membership. This special occasion ended with Earl
Mgebroff playing an assortment of Christmas carols on the piano
as members chimed in to sing the beautiful seasonal music. After
exchanging warn holiday wishes with one another, each member
departed with a true spirit of Christmas in her heart.

Preschoolers visit library
Phyllis Lauer and her able assistant, Virginia Markert and students of
Learning with Mrs. Lauer are pictured above enjoying a very festive
and colorful Christmas display at the Carl and Mary Welhausen Li-
brary. This year's theme Fiesta Christmas is exceptionally beautiful as
well as informative. The exhibit showcases the customs and social life
of the Mexican people. Mrs. Ferrell invites all Yoakumites to visit and
enjoy the exuberance of Mexico.
