students may be able to shave an
entire college semester off their
future college studies while still in
high school. That can translate
down the road into several
hundreds or even several
thousands of dollars in savings.
Students enrolled in the program at
SPC are waived tuition and
out-of-district fees, and only pay
instructional support fees.
"This is a great educational
bargain," said Walker.
Parents are pleased with the
financial advantages the program
offers. One mother noted, "It saves
on college expenses. One of my
daughters was able to graduate
from high school with 15 hours
college credit."
Walker feels the positive
attitude of parents is one reason the
dual credit program is so healthy.
"Parents are driving the
enrollment," he believes. "They
look at the costs, see the
advantages plus the quality of
instruction."

dual credit program, contact Jim

will be a self-paced class. Classes
will run concurrent with the

"We must start thinking in
terms of a virtual classroom
education that is accessible to
everyone, no matter where they are
at," said Richey. "I want the
course to be accessible not only to
students in our 15-county service
area on the South Plains but to
people in Dallas or Houston or
Roswell, N.M., if they need the
class. I want those who do not
have an opportunity to have
face-to-face contact in an actual
classroom to be able to take this
course."
The course discusses
information on the criminal justice
system, from the nature and impact
of crime to the system, functions of
law enforcement, courts,
corrections, employment criteria
and career opportunities in the
criminal justice field.
