More pigs per litter can be
produced when the mother sow’s
diet is supplemented with aure-
omycin during pregnancy. Al-
though the number of embryos
and birth weight of pigs could
not be increased by using the
feed supplement, it is known
that more pigs are born live and
an “inborn” resistance enables
more of them to survive
weaned.
Remarkable results
been found in preserving
with aureomycin. Such action of
antibiotics in keeping fresh
longer is to prevent formative
of spoilage bacteria for a longer
period. It is not a substitute for
refrigeration, but a supplement
to it. ’
The ratio of antibiotics used
in most of these processes is
very small. If these test situa-
tions can be considered an ac-
curate measuring stick for the
world livestock industry, then a
dramatic increase in the world
food supply is possible.
Use of antibiotics in production
and marketing of meat animals
may have a profound effect on
Texas livestock industry.
Definite proof has been
lished that use of certain
“wonder drugs” can do
thing from bringing more pigs
per liter to keeping beef, poultry,
fish and even whales fresh.
In tests using aureoycin feed
supplements, growth of pigs has
been
36%. ;
from
beef
cattle.
This
saving
since animals would get to mark-
et sooner. Use of the feed supple-
ments also has results in a sav-
ing of about 20 lbs. of feed per
100 lbs. of grain due to increas-
ed efficiency of food utilization.
This speeded-up growth is
probably brought about as an-
tibiotics keep down germs of
some diseases, create good con-
ditions for organisms which pri-
duce vitamins, suppress intestin-
al germs which compete with the
animal for vitamins in its food,
ligion or lack of it in the parents
reflecting itself in the children.
Recently, in Oklahoma, a young
man was sentenced to die in the
electric chair. His father Scream-
ed that the kid was framed and
was being unjustly treated by the
law. But his father had to get
permission and release from the
prison authorities where he was
held to even go see his son. And
his mother, under sentence for
one murder and indictment for
another could not even get re-
leased to see him. He had a
brother in one prison and an
uncle who died in another. And
the boy was framed. I think he
was, too. But not by the law,
but by his p'arents who denied
him moral and religious training
in a world where immoral and
irreligious living contain within
themselves the seeds of their
own destruction. His
raised their son to die
electric chair and he was
living up to his training.
This still God’s world,
reflected in a law in
Arabia, which says that
driving a car which kills another
must be put to death. Over there
they mean what the slogan says,,
“The life you save may be your
own.”

“Wait till I get a pencil and

“How do you spell Brown?”

In looking through the courses
offered in a Theological semin-
ary the other day, I noticed a
course in “Practical Theology.” I
like that. I think that my New
Year’s resolution for this column
should be to deal with just that,
and only that. Let’s have a
practical religion. I mean by
this, not one that is necessarily
financially rewarding, or even
psychologically rewarding, for
the religion which Jesus follow-
ed was neither. His cost him
every cent he had and caused
him untold grief and misery.
But his love of God was great
enough that he was willing to
stay true because he loved God
and knew he could trust Him.
I mean by 'a practical religion,
one on which a person can build
his life, knowing that experience
will justify his decision and com-
mitment. For instance, morals.
Either we live in a moral uni-
verse or we don’t’.' Either cre-
ation wrecks havoc upon the un-
Godly or it ignores them equally
with the Godly. Take, as a case
in point, the matter of the re-
