Right, 1929: St. Mary's University opened
the doors of its present location to students
in 1893. At that time, the campus con-
sisted of only the Administration Building.
It housed, fed, and taught those students
enrolled at what was then known as St.
Louis College. Enrollment increased over
the next several years and so did the cam-
pus. By 1929, Chaminade Tower, Reinbolt
Hall, and the Gymnasium had been added
to the campus.
Far Right, 1986: Today, St. Mary's
University is a first-rate Catholic educa-
tional institution. With two libraries and
eleven classroom buildings, St. Mary's of-
fers students a choice of over 75 degree
programs from five schools. Enrollment is
over 3,000 with one-third of the students
residing on campus in the seven residence
halls.

Historians often classify periods accord-
ing to the events that shape them. The
Nineties were "gay," the Twenties
"roared," and the Sixties were "turbulent."
Perhaps the Eighties will be characterized
as a decade of responsiveness.
In response to increasing foreign com-
petition, American business is developing a
highly advanced technology. To meet the
needs of growing populations, cities are
making major capital improvements. All
around us, we see the need to adapt to
changes in our environment.
Because St. Mary's University does not
exist in a vacuum, we too must respond to
the inevitable change. St. Mary's must be
prepared to meet these challenges. Over
the past few years we have defined our
goals. Now is the time for action. The Cam-
paign for St. Mary's, one of the most visi-
ble signs of action, is designed to provide
the finances necessary for St. Mary's to
meet future needs. The combined efforts of
faculty, staff, administrators, students,
parents, alumni, and the community at
large contribute to make the campaignsuccessful. It is the second stage of the five
year overall master plan to bring St. Mary's
into a position to meet these future
challenges. The addition of another
residence hall, the renovation of
Chaminade Hall, and the construction of
the new Law Library are signs of greater
things to come.
St. Mary's is a University on the move.
The Diamondback's cover design shows
the new logo of the University. The logo
was created to symbolize St. Mary's
University's distinctiveness. Blending the
heritage of the past with the hopes for the
future, it incorporates the four tenets of the
mission of St. Mary's: "Founded and
fostered as a community of faith, the
University gives Christian purpose and
dynamism to a pursuit in which people of
varied traditions and experience unite in
commitment to an educational venture, in
dedication to a life of scholarship, and in
the extension of service to society."
Most definitely, St. Mary's is a Universi-
ty on the move.Events
