The Leonard F.H.A. chapter
had an official meeting Friday,
the 13th of February. The meet-
ing was called to order by our
prtsident, Saundra McCaslin. The
roll was called by our secretary,
Sharon Bernard, and the minutes
were read.
The purpose of the meeting was
to find out who was planning on
attending the Area Meeting at
Commerce on Saturday, Feb. 20.
After this was discussed, the
group voted on two girls who
wanted to represent the chapter
at the student meeting in Dallas.
The girls chosen by secret ballot
were Patty Haynes and Saundra
McCaslin. These two girls will
leave with Miss Alexander April
24, and wil stay over night so
they can attend Saturday’s meet-
ing. The meeting will

to have a day set aside for West-
ern Day. The day decided on was
Feb. 27. Everyone at school will
dress Western that day, and Fri-
day night there will be a party
in the gym to crown the Western
King and Queen. This includes
the eighth grade through the
twelfth. Everybody remember this
coming Friday and dress West-
ern and take a part in the fun!

gym on a glass-slick floor, the
Leonard Tigers fumbled and slip-

wright scored 12 for the winners.
Leonard won' the fifth game of
the season Wednesday night on
the home court when they defeat-
ed Bells in a make-up game. Hall-
mark again led in the 48-37 win
with 16 points for the Tigers.
Whitlock scored 11 points for
Bells to be high point.
The Tigers entered the District
Tournament in next to last place
and were defeated by Wolfe City
in the first round Thursday aft-
ernoon. The score was 51-31, but
the Tigers played their hearts
out in the last game of the year.
The five wins and sixteen losses
posted by the Tigers this year is
I not an impressive record. Not
wanting to offer excuses but rath-
er point out the reason for this
record, this writer wishes to state
the following opinion. There were
only eight boys on the club at the
season’s end (and most of these
had little or no experience) while
many more reported for practice
' at the beginning of the year. The
j boys who quit could probably
give a number of good reasons,
but the main one was the lack of
interest, not enought interest to
stay out until a basketball pro-
gram could properly be establish-
ed. This interest starts not in a
boy’s senior year, but years befori
by his parents, his grade schoo
; teachers, and by the general en-
couragement of the public. No
i until the importance of basketbal
at least approaches that of foot-
ball and other sports in the mind;
of the citizens of this community
will this interest improve. Anc
not until this interest improve;
i will Leonard turn out the basket-
ball teams that it is so
1 ‘ of turning out.

By the time you read this you
will have heard a dozen explana-
tions as to why cotton’s support
prices are lower than the trade
generally expected ... but there
is only one real explanation: The
Secretary of Agriculture is de-
termined to reduce cotton surpluses
in at least two ways . . . first, by
not giving cotton a high support
price he is trying to weed out in-
efficient producers . . . second, he
is getting the sales price of cotton
more in line with foreign growths
and competitive synthetics.
The way supports were reduced
was to figure parity differently
from what was done in the past
. . . trade didn’t expect this as the
Department of Agriculture had
given no hint it was in the wind
. . . this is the first revision of the
parity formula since 1950.
Along these same lines the Sec-
retary announced that American
cotton will have an export program
that makes it competitive price-
wise with foreign grown cotton.
As a producer you may weep ovei
the low support price . but you
must smile at the possibility ot

Leonard boys lost out when Wolfe
City defeated them 51-31.
In district play-off the girls
division will be played off by
Bells and Celeste. The boys play-
off is undecided. Trenton plays
Ladonia for make-up game and
the winner of that game will play
Wolfe City for
championship.

amencan cotton for the coming
year . . . the lower price will not
only encourage additional use oi
cotton in the U. S. and abroad but
it will certainly tend to stop ex-
pansion of foreign production . . .
already signs indicate a consider-
able reduction in Mexican cotton
acreage . . . maybe as much as 35
per cent.
What About “B”?
How will the lower support price
affect “B” Choice of the cotton
program ? 7 . . . frankly we don’t
know and we don’t believe anybody
else does for a very simple reason
. . . the decision to go “A” or “B”
depends upon individual reasons
that won’t apply to everybody so
you can’t make any sort of a gen-
eralization . . . one thing, .though,
the spread in dollars between “B”
cotton and “A” cotton supports is
slightly narrower than it would
have been had a higher parity fig-
ure been used . . . this could en-
courage “B” production.
March 16th
Now you better believe this no
matter what anybody tells you
. . . if you haven’t notified your
county committee in writing by
March 16th that you are going the
“B” route, then you are going to
be among the “A’s” . . . don’t try
to come in later with a sad
about what your intentions
. . . it won’t work . . . and
say we didn’t tell you!!!
