Graveside services for Mavis
Heard. 76, were at 3 p.m. Tuesday in
theCity of Levelland Cemetery with
the Rev. Tim Turner, pastor of the
First Assembly of God Church, and
Barbara French officiating.
Burial was under the direction of
George C. Price Funeral Directors.
She died at 7:30 a.m. Monday in
the Levelland Nursing Home
following a lengthy illness.
She was bom in Memphis, Tenn.
She moved to Level land in 1971 from
Petersburg. She married James
Richard Heard on Dec. 22,1938 in
Tahoka. He preceded her in death on
Jan. 4,1972. She was a homemaker
and a member of the First United
Methodist Church.
She is survived by a son, James
R. Heard III of Grand Prairie; a
daughter, Billie Robbins; two sisters,
Ruth Evelyn Sparks of Seminole and
Francelle of Oklahoma; four
grandchildren; and five great-
grandchildren.

Funeral services for Diana
Morrison Radke, 28, were held at 11
a.m. Monday, March 4, in the Grove
Hill Funeral Home Chapel.
She died Feb. 29 in Garland.
She was bom in Manhattan, Ks.
She is survived by a son, Zachary;
her parents, Neil and Nancy Morri-
son and Sherry and Ken Parker; a
brother, Michael Morrison; a sister,
Jennifer Morrison; and her grand-
mother, Ruby Tompkin.
A trust fund has been established
for Zachary Radke at Citizens Bank
in Levelland.

Thompson, 85, will be Thursday at 1
p.m. in the City of Levelland
Cemetery with Pastor Ed Clark

Burns-Smith Funeral Home.
She died March 12 at 2:30 p.m. in
Methodist Hospital Levelland.
She was bom in Oklahoma. She
was a homemaker and a Baptist.
She is survived by four sons,
Arthur and Paul of California, Charles
and Travis; four daughters, Mary Jo
Oquin of Perryton, Juanita Rice of
Colorado, Helen Campbell of
Level land and Shirley Graninger; a
brother, Royce Stanifer of California;
28 grandchildren; and 28 great-
grandchildren.

April 1 to apply for the opportunity
to study public policy in the fall
semester from inside the U.S. Capitol
in Washington, D.C. and receive
college credit.
The 19th Congressional District
Public Policy Internship Program is
jointly sponsored by U.S. Representa-
tive Larry Combcst (R-Texas) and the
university for both spring and fall
semesters. Undergraduate students
who have completed their freshman
year at either Texas Tech University
or West Texas A&M in Canyon and
have a cumulative grade point
average of at least 3.0 are eligible to
participate. Application forms for
Tech are available from each college
dean. WT students may receive
applications from Dr. Flavius
Killebrew.

Driver’s education
class scheduled
Registration for Driver’s Education
classes for high school students will
be held in the high school library on
Tuesday, March 25, at 7 a.m.
Registration for Junior High
students will be held in the high
school library on Thursday, March
28, at7a.m. There will be two classes
held, one before school and one after
school, limited to a total of 72
students. Classes are scheduled to
begin Monday, April 1. The cost is
$120 and payable at the time of
registration. Students must be 15
years of age on or before March 23,
1996 in order to take the cfass.
Preference will be given to LISD
students and determined by age.
There is no early registration.

SPC students win at
state forensic meet
Alonzo Peterson, a South
Plains College forensic team
member from Levelland, won
first place in communication
analysis this weekend at the
Texas Speech Communication
and Texas Junior College Speech
and Theater Association State
Forensic Tournament in Tyler.
Peterson also won second in
speech to entertain and fourth in
persuasion.
SPC forensic team member
Jennifer McCabe from Lubbock
won third in informative and
fifth in persuasion. Victoria
Edwards from Seminole won
second in dramatic interpretation
and eighth in poetry, and Terri
Wilcox from Levelland won
third in prose.
SPC forensic team members
will also compete March 15-16
al the Panhandle Fry Swing, a
swing tournament jointly hosted
by Texas Tech University and
West Texis A&M University.
Peterson, McCabe and
Wilcox have already qualified to
compete at the national Phi Rho
Pi Speech Tournament April
7-13 in Chicago. Edwards
qualified for the National Tour-
nament through her win at the
stale meet.
"We are very pleased with
the, students’ win at the state
meet. They were very competi-
tive and represented SPC well,"
said Natalie Bryant, SPC assis-
tant professor of speech.
Other colleges which com-
peted were Wharton County
Junior College, Trinity Valley
Community College, San Anto-
nio College, Central Texas
College, San Jacinto Central,
Paris Junior College, Panola
College, Lee College, Tyler

Trash and grass fires were some of
the blazes that the Levelland Fire
Department extinguished in recent
days.
Firefighters went to the 3100 block
of Gusher on Sunday night in
response to a controlled bum.
A small grass fire broke out at 2:27
p.m. Sunday in the 1800 block of
Ninth Street. No damage was
reported.
Three firefighters put out a
Director
election
slated
Hockley County cotton producers
and agribusiness representatives will
elect a Business Director to Plains
Colton Growers Inc. at an 8 a.m.
breakfast meeting on Tuesday, March
19 at A-J’s Cafe in Levelland.
Announcement of the election
comes from Bud Reding of Littlefield,
Hockley County Producer Director
to the 25-county cotton organization,
and Buz Poage, current business
director.
Each county in PCG’s service area
has two directors, one a business
person and the other a cotton
producer. They are elected on
alternate years for two-year terms.
Each is eligible for re-election every
second year.
All producers and business people
are invited to the meeting. However,
under PCG By-Laws, only current
dues-paying members of PCG will be
eligible to be elected as a director or
to vote in the election. This provision
of the by-laws will be fully explained
at the meeting.
A PCG representative will conduct
the election, review and answer
questions about recent and planned
PCG activities.
Dumpster fire Sunday morning in the
800 block of Avenue A.
A grass fire occurred at 6:10 p.m.
Saturday at the 807 Ave. B home of
Margcrita Vcncz.ula. Reports listed
no property damage.
Another trash fire was called in late
Saturday afternoon in the 100 block
of Eighth Street. Two firemen brought
the blaze under control quickly.
A fuse arcing on a pole led to a
possible fire being investigated at
3:20 p.m. Saturday at 206 Ave. U.
Three firefighters were sent to the
scene.
A second instance of an electrical
short occurred at 1:30 p.m. March 8
at the Levelland EMS office. No
damage was reported.
