Thursday
A gift certificate for a pair
of Wrangler jeans and a chicken
strip dinner for two will be given
away Thursday night (March 14)
during a performance. of Thurs-
day Nite Live, South Plains
College's live monthly televised
musical variety show.
The show, set for 7:30 p.m.
in the Tom T. Hall Studio in the
Creative Arts Building, will be
aired live on SPC-TV, cable
channel 10.
Admission is free. Eddie’s
Cowboy Store, located at 624
Ave. H and owned by Eddie
Courtney, will provide a gift
certificate for a pair of Wrangler
jeans. The Dairy Mart, located
at 1714 Ave. H and owned by
Darlene Condrcn, will provide a
gift certificate for a chicken strip
dinner for two. The gift certi-
ficates will be given at random
to members of the studio audi-
ence.
Thursday Nite Live’s student
ensemble and the King Bees, a
rhythm and blues and classic
rock ensemble, will span six
decades of popular music in their
performance.

Local residents named to All- State
Levelland residents Mark
Anthony and David Rivera were
among seven South Plains
College musicians who recently
were selected to the Texas Junior
College All-State Jazz Band.
The student musicians, who
auditioned on four jazz selections
on cassette tape, performed at
the Texas Muisc Educators
Association Convention which
was held Feb. 14-17 in San
Antonio.
The All-State Jazz Band was
directed by Alan Shinn, director
of jazz and percussion at Texas
Tech University. Jeff Jarvis,
composer, arranger and chief
editor of Kendor Music Publish-
ing was the guest trumpet solo-
ist.
The concert was held Feb.
17 at the San Antonio Conven-
tion Center. The students re-
hearsed for 21 hours during a
three-day span to prepare for the
event.
Anthony and Rivera were
joined for the All-State Band by
Eric Truskosky, Ricky Zapata
and Aaron Wolf of Lubbock,
Bryan Anders from Schulenburg
and Mike Bishop of San Saba.
Anthony, a freshman busi-
ness major, performed on trum-
pet. A student of part-time
instructor Jim Green, Anthony is
a member of the SPC Jazz Band,
the SPC Symphonic Band, the
brass choir, the brass quintet and
jazz combo.
College All-American Band on
both tenor and alto saxophone,
performs in the SPC Jazz Band,
SPC Jazz Combo SPC Sym-
phonic Band and sax quartet
Zapata, a Lubbock High
product, performed on bass
trombone. The sophomore music
major.is a student of Dr. Bruce
Keeling, professor of music.
Zapata, who also was selected to
the Community College All-
American Band on bass trom-
bone, is a member of the SPC
Jazz Band, the SPC Symphonic
Band, brass choir, low brass
choir and “Dad’s Bones,” a
trombone ensemble.
Wolf, a Coronado High
School product, performed on
trombone. The freshman music
major is a student of Dr. Keel-
ing. He is a member of the SPC
Jazz Band, the SPC Symphonic
Band, low brass choir, brass
choir and Dad’s Bones.
Anders, a sophomore music
major, perfomed on trombone. A
student of Dr. Keeling, Anders is
a member of the SPC Jazz Band,
the SPC Symphonic Band, brass
choir, low brass choir and Dad’s
Bones.
Bishop, a sophomore music
major, performed on guitar. He
plays guitar in the SPC Jazz
Band arid jazz combo. He also
plays french hom in the SPC
Symphonic Band.

The American Cancer Society will
. host a program for dealing with grief
from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the
society’s office, 3411 73rd St. (off
Indiana Avenue near Loop 289).
"Life After Loss" is a free five-
week program which focuses on the
emotional and physical aftermath of
a loved one’s death and how to cope
with those effects.
The group will meet each Thursday
evening through April 4.

Rosemary Zamora announces the
birth of her daughter, Amy Rose
Magana, bom March 4 at Methodist
Hospital Levelland.
She weighed 8 pounds and 2
ounces and was 19 inches long.
Her grandparents are Karen and
Reynoldo Zamora of Scottsbluff,
Neb.
Her brothers and sisters are Basilio
Ray Mendez, 7, and Alyssa Deserea
Torres, 5.
R. Gomez
deployed
Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class
Rogerio Gomez, son of Rogerio
Zespeda and Rosalinda Gomez, has
departed for a six-month overseas
deployment to the Persian Gulf
aborad the guided missile destroyer
USS Callaghan.
Gomez is one of345 sailors aboard
the ship, which departed San Diego
as part of the nine-ship USS Nimitz
Battle Group which includes mere
than 80 tactical aircraft, and ships and
submarines armed with Tomahawk
cruise missiles.
Gomez and fellow sailors spent the
last year training for a variety of
situations they might encounter
during the deployment.
Gomez is a 1993 graduate of
Levelland High School joined the
Navy in October 1993.
