Piano guild auditions
set for April 24-26
The American College of
Musicians will have their annual
Piano Guild Auditions April 24-
216 at the First Baptist Church.
Janice Bowen of Canyon will
adjudicate the event. She has
maintained a private studio in
Canyon since 1980, and prior to
that in Lubbock and Nacogdoches.
She is a graduate of Hardin-Simm-
ons University in Abilene with a
major in piano performance. She
also holds a Master of Music from
Texas Tech University with a
major in organ.
In addition to piano classes,
since 1985 she has taught Kinder -
musik classes for preschoolers
through the Continuing Education
Department of West Texas A&M
University. Bowen is active as a
church musician, presently as a
pianist of the First Baptist Church
in Canyon. She also has experience
in directing children’s choirs and
accompanying both at church and
at WTAMU.
Bowen in active in Amarillo
Music Teacher’s Association,
currently as Certification chair-
man. She is a member of and holds
national certification through the
Texas Music Teacher’s Associa-
tion and the Music Teacher’s
National Association and is also
active in the National Guild of
Piano Teachers, Kindcrmusik
Teacher’s Association and Canyon
Fine Arts Club.
Piano students participating in
the Levelland Piano Guild this year
are from studios of Mrs. Bobby
Brunson, Pat Cearley, Shyrle Hill,
April Kuehler, Zilpha Scherer and
Rosemary Jenkins, Guild Chair-
man.

The Hockley County Retired
and Senior Volunteer Program
(RSVP) celebrated National
Volunteer Week with a five special
programs from each of the commu-
nities in Hockley County. The
Sundown Chapter kicked the week
off with their skit of "Hats for
Sale.” Volunteers from the Sun-
down Chapter were Alva Varner,
who said the invocation and
Pauline Varner, Olivia McCullogh,
Billie Craddodc, Ruby Brown,
Natha Standifer, Mary Roe, Velma
and Royce Comer, and their
coordinator Betty Medford. On
T uesday the Pep and Whitharral
Chapters jointly hosted the day
with the Rev. Will Fish giving the
invocation. Their special guests
were members of the Bluegrass
band from SPC. Whitharral volunt-
eers present were Jo Waters,
Thelma Overman, Delphia Taylor
and coordinator Leta Mitchell. Pep
volunteers were Lydia Green and
coordinator Ollie Mae Clawson.
On Wednesday, Smyer presented
"Yesterday and Today" a charming
rendition of the good old days
compared to the great now days
complete with visual props includ-
ing an outhouse. Gary Goff gave
the invocation. Smyer volunteers
present were Lois Brown, Char-
lotte Kiser, Rosilee Floyd, Mattie
Bartlett, Frances Hilley, Welda
Floyd and coordinator Ruth St.
Clair. On Thursday the Ropesville
chapter presented a sing along with
Lillian Hill and Lawanna Ferguson
playing piano. Leading the singing
with Serf Campbell, L.E. Wilson
and John Smith. Other volunteers
from Ropesville were Roy Carpen-
ter giving the invocation. Willie
Mac Griffith, Bea Briggs, Bonnie
Fleming, John and Loveta Ream,
Gcncllc Carpenter, Ruby Wilson,
Writa Kitchen, Sidney and Inez
Price, Ina Watson, Jack Roman,
Kathleen and Marshall Armstrong,
Opal Jones and coordinator Ruth
Braden. On Friday, the Levelland
Chapter hosted the day with Patty
Hardin, director of Senior Com-
panions as their guest speaker and
musical entertainment provided by
the Kitchen Klatter Band and the
Alexander Family. Registration
was done by Fannie Gravitt and
Mabie Dunn.
The week long event was held to
recognize the many hours of
service given by the 670 volunteers
age 55 and older in Hockley
County through the RSVP pro-
gram. Senior volunteers work in a
variety of areas from minor yard
work, providing transportation,
reading to young children, tutoring
literacy, caring for the sic to assist-
ing in classrooms, feeding the
hungry and providing HIV/AIDS
education senior volunteers are
meeting unmet needs in Hockley
County. For information on the
Retired and Senior Volunteer

Planning
seminar
slated
The First Step and Special
Services programs on the South
Plains College Lubbock Campus
will host “Go For II!,” a free
step-by-step planning seminar for
persons interested in attending
college on Tuesday, April 25.
The event will be held from
6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the
Community Room of the Mahon
Library in Lubbock (1306 9th
Street).

A collection of personal items
and money is being collected for
Steve and Stacy Rucker.
The Rucker’s home burnt
Wednesday and they lost every-
thing.
( ’lothing items and linens can be
dropped off at the Sundown Super-
intendent’s office or Sundown City
Hall. Those wishing to donate
furniture and larger items can call
Donna Fryar at 229-8891 or drop
the items off at her home located at
311 W. Sixth Street in Sundown.
The family is in need of every-
thing.
A fund has been established at
the Sundown State Bank entitled
"Rucker Family Fund."
The Rucker’s have two children,
Chelsey and Corey. Steve is the
son of Jax and Dellwyn McSpadd-
en of Sundown and Mr. and Mrs.
Gary Rucker of Ropes.
Chelsey wears as size 24 mont-
hs, Corey wears a size 8 shirt and a
9 slim pant. Stacy wears a size 9
dress, medium blouse and 8-10
pant. Steve wears a 16 1/2 shirt
with sleeve length 36 and a 32x34
pant.
All donations will be appreciat-

SPC choir
slates finale
Poetry arrangements will
presented with Latin hymns and
folk songs during the final
concert of the spring semester
for the SPC Concert Choir.
The concert, which is free
and open to the public, will be
held at 8 p.m. Thursday, April
27, in the Theater for the Per-
forming Arts at South Plains
College.
