Hint to the Census Taker.
I have one suggestion to make: that
our national government, when it takes
the next general census, include in its
statistics information about all the peo-
ple in the United States above 90, the
kind of information to be determined
beforehand by the most eminent physi-
cians and scientific men generally in
this country or in the world. I believe
that such information would be of more
value to the world, after having been
properly digested, than all the facts
about the manufacture of cotton cloth,
the raising of tobacco, the production of
whisky, etc., that could be collected in a
century. For do we not all desire to live
long?—Clement M. Hammond in Popular
Science Monthly.

country where criminals so frequently
escape justice. During 1886-87 there
were in London 42,391 indictments and
only 19,045 of the offenders were placed
under arrest. This shows that more than
one-half escaped. It is further to be
noted that of those apprehended 3,762
were discharged for want of evidence
and 1,325 for want of prosecution, so
that the number held to bail or com-
mitted was reduced to 13,958. Of these,
again, only about 10,468, or 75 per cent.,
were convicted, or less than one-fourth
of the number of crimes committed.—

The “Gangs” of London. *•
The London police records show that
“gangs” flourish there as they do in New
York. The Marylebone gang, the Fitz-
roy Place gang, the Monkey Parade gang,
the Black gang, the Newcut gang, the
Greengate gang, the Prince Arthur gang,
the Gang of Roughs, the Jovial Thirty-
two, are some of the most important,
each one having its own stamping ground.
The Monkey Parade gang infests White-
chapel.—New York Sun.

FRISCO LINE,
observed in Galveston to-day, the public i
offices being closed throughout the day,
while a number of stores closed up for a
i7 few hours to give employers and employes
an opportunity to interview the succu-
lent oyster and its savory covering of
turkey. Services were held at all the |
Catholic churches in conformity with
the special request of Cardinal Gibbons
of Baltimore. The prayer for the authori-
ties was recited after mass, as directed by
the cardinal’s circular. Special Thanks-
giving services were held at 11 o’clock at
Trinity church and were well attended.
Those more bent upon pleasure are in at-
tendance upon the grand Thanksgiving
matinee being given at the opera house.
The day has been bright and beautiful
and the city is on its best behavior, the
police finding absolutely nothing to do.

Attention Given to Ballooning.
Ballooning is receiving a great deal of
attention frem the naval and military
authorities both in England and France
as a valuable aid in land and marine
movements. During the recent naval
maneuvers in the defense of Toulon, a
reconnoitering balloon was used with
good effect day and night by the aid of
electricity, and now an experiment is
being made with a navigable aerial ship
for the same purpose. In England bal-
looning has also attracted attention, es-
pecially in connection with the new for-
mation of troops for attacking purposes.
Almost daily ascents are made at the
training camp of Lydd for the purposes
of photography and observation. On one
occasion a moving balloon was made the
target of a party of gunners working a
twelve pound Armstrong gun, with the
result of its being blown to pieces after
rather nlore than a dozen shots. So
that the fiction of the fatal duel between
rival balloons is likely to be realized dur-
ing the next general war.—San Fran-
cisco Chronicle.

The Magnet in Surgery.
Mechanics and others employed in iron
factories frequently suffer some annoy-
ance and no little pain from the acci-
dental introduction into the eye of par-
ticles of steel, iron filings, etc. All
persons engaged in work of this kind
should carry with them magnets, the use
of which rarely fails to remove the foreign
body. A man in Lonvale, Ga., drove a
piece of steel filing into his eyeball a few
days ago, and a surgeon spent some time
in vain endeavors to extract it. Finally
he brought a powerful electro-magnet
to his aid, by means of which the offens-
ive particle was at once removed. It
was over a quarter of an inch long, and
its entire length had been imbedded in
the eyeball.—Chicago News.
A Dramatic Version, of a Remarkable
Novel—Coming Attractions.
A large audience assembled at the Tre-
mont last night to witness a dramatic
version of that remarkable nightmare of
Rider Haggard’s, entitled “She.” The
dramatization is by Mr. Wm. A. Brady,
who has followed’the novelist as closely
as po sible in regard to scenes and inci-
dents. Of the play itself mucli can be
said for and against. The best critics
agree that a drama should confine itself
if nut to the probabilities at least to the
possibilities. Mr. Haggard’s novel ig-
nores both, consequently a dramatization
of it must be handicapped, with absur-
dities. Yet while absurd, even ridicu-
lous, suggesting in the wierd and im-
possible plot, an uneasy postprandial
dream, it is withal deeply interesting and
pregnant with line dramatic situations. It
is to be regretted that. Mr. Brady has not
followed the elegant diction of Haggard
as closely as he has followed the plot of
his novel. The language which be puts
in the mouth of “She” is at times over-
strained and exceedingly cumbersome.
The play has the advantage of some of
the finest scenery ever seen upon the
Tremont stage, and some of the effects
are wonderfully fine. The title role is

success, and its interesting story and
thrilling situations, combined with the I
able manner in which it is performed,
will doubtless secure for it a liberal pat-
ronage during its stay here; Miss Ada

of the character of the heroine, Nan, the

adventurer, which part is well done by
Mr. C. G. Craig. Jenkinson, by Leonard
Grover, Jr.; Charlie Johnson by Mr. Alf.
Fisher; and Mrs. Maloney, by Miss
Marion Strickland, are severally effec-
tively done character sketches. The low
comedy impersonations—Mr. W. T, Gro-

Carr, as Tom Chickweed; and Mabie
Pollock, as little Paul—are also done in
commendable fashion.” This piece is here
for three nights and one matinee.

The residence of Colonel and Mrs. Geo.
P. Finlay, corner Thirty-fourth street
and avenue L, was the scene of a brilliant
social gathering last night, the occasion
being the debut of their accomplished
young daughter, Miss Virgilia Finlay.
The spacious rooms wete handsomely
decorated with choice flowers and a band
of excellent music» was in attendance.
Shortly after 8 o’clock the gueste began
to arrive and half an hour later therooms
were literally ablaze with the beauty and •
chivalry of the Island City. It was a full 1
dress affair and the toilets of the ladies <
were remarkably handsome. Dancing ;
was the principal divertisement of the
evening, and to the sound of sweet music
the hours sped only too swiftly by. The
large galleries had been curtained in
and upon the upper one was spread
a feast that might have put
to blush the famed banquets of the
Sybarites. Thither the guests repaired at
I 12 o’clock, and having done full justice
to the tempting viands dancing was re-
sumed, and it was not until three o clock
that 'the music ceased and adiues were
regretfully made. It was universally
