In the summer of 1962, three wise men
from the east discovered a lovely inlet on
recently created Lake Travis, approximately
twenty miles west of Austin. The following
year they built and opened the Lakeway Inn.
Despite the surrounding land being populated
mostly by goats, the founders laid out residen-
tial streets, hoping that a few hardy souls might
build vacation or retirement homes. They con-
sidered permanent homes unrealistic because
the Austin media and local Realtors thought
Lakeway far too distant for a sensible commute.
There was, however, life in this part of
Texas long before Lakeway became a reality,
and the early chapters of this book describe
the hardscrabble existence of the nine-
teenth- and early twentieth-century pioneers
who discovered that too often insufficient
water and disappearing topsoil resulted in
undernourished families, crops, and domes-
tic animals. Nevertheless, these were a hardy
people, and many of their family names can
still be found in today's Lakeway and its sur-
rounding communities.
Visitors have long admired Lakeway's
exquisite natural beauty, featuring green-
belts, canyons, parklands, Lake Travis, and
miles of walking trails. Equally impressive is
the story of the countless unpaid volunteers
who molded Lakeway into a vibrant and
unique community that today is approach-
ing 12,000 inhabitants.
