gains are cheap gains. Also
experience shows that when
Holstein qalves are started
• on super-energy rations at
around 300 to 350 pounds
weight arid marketed under
950 pounds (I) there's ex-
cellent marbling with very
little bark (outside fat),and
(2) many of these animals
: ' will grade Choice, because
of the superior marbling---
despite some deficiencies in
conformation.
HIGH ROUGHAGE RATION^
HEAVY MARKET WEIGHTS
If roughages are realtiyely
more abundant and cheaper
than concentrates, then it
may be more remunerative
to feed dairy beef more rou-
ghage and market at heavier
'weights-T—and with it to ex-
pect slower and less efficient
gains. In any event, it's net
returns that count, rather
than rate of gain and pounds
of feed required per pound
of gain.
Under the high roughage
system, steers of dairy breed-
ing are grown on maximum
roughage to 600 to 750 lbs.
weight, following which the
ratio of concentrate to rou- '
ghage is increased. Most
dairy steers fed according to
this system are marketed at
■weights of 1,050 to 1,200 lbs.
