The Rusk County Commissioner’s Court
enacted a burn ban for Rusk County during a
special called meeting Tuesday morning.
The ban states that burning in enclosed burn
barrels or receptacles is prohibited. It doesn’t
nullify the use of gas or charcoal grills or bar-
becue smokers.
Commissioner Bill Hale said he’d like to see
the court allow burning during a rain event, and
that is allowed under the current burn ban.
Henderson Fire Department Chief Rusty
Chote said his office has responded to six fires
since the last court meeting, including three in
the last three days.
Rusk County Office of Emergency Manage-
ment (OEM) spokesperson Patrick Dooley said
his office has responded to 21 grass fires and
three structure fires in the same time frame.
The court discussed issuing a provisional
burn ban.
“People think they can handle a controlled
burn, but they can’t,” said Dooley, who added
the last seven fires his office has responded
to have been controlled burns that got out of
control. “That’s why I think we need a full burn
ban.”
The ban is for 90 days, but the commis-
sioner’s court has another meeting scheduled
for Monday.
“We will come back and revisit this on Mon-
day,” said Rusk County Judge Joel Hale.
Also, Rusk County Sheriff Jeff Price was
approved to declare weapons and vehicles as
surplus.
In doing so, the office can now auction the
weapons.
