Texas and Rusk County have
some of the highest occurences
of diabetes in the nation.
On Saturday, East Texas
Medical Center-Henderson will
shed some light and offer sup-
port for diabetes research with
its one-mile walk/5K run at the
hospital.
The purpose of this event is
to raise funds to provide dia-
betes self-management educa-
tion scholarships to individuals
in Rusk County who are unin-
sured or underinsured.
Ella Brock, director of dia-
betes education at ETMC Hen-
derson, said they are wanting
to enable people to learn the
skills to self manage diabetes
because 95 percent of diabetes
is self-management.
“The goal of the ETMC dia-
betes education outreach center
is to provide diabetes education
to all people with diabetes, to
teach them the skills they need
to prevent complications and to
prevent diabetes,” Brock said.
Diabetes is a growing prob-
lem in America today, and Rusk
County is one of the counties
with the highest occurrences of
diabetes. In Rusk County the
percentage of people with dia-
betes is 12.9 percent, and in the
state of Texas it is 11.1 percent,
Brock said.
Those with diabetes can
experience complications that
will decrease their quality of
life, leaving the financial bur-
den to increase.

Henderson resident Steve
Sanders had no idea he was
related to former President Bill
Clinton until he did a bit of
family-history research.
Sanders shared the impor-
tance of researching one’s fam-
ily history to Optimist Club
members Thursday.
“There are lessons to be
learned for some people when
researching family history,”
Sanders said. “You discover
about your heritage, and it
might just be interesting.”
While doing research, Sand-
ers learned he was a fourth
cousin to the former president.
They shared the same great-
great-great grandfather.

We gain an hour of sleep
Sunday morning when clocks
are turned back one hour. But
that perceived benefit of the
end of daylight-saving time still
upsets our rest patterns.
Dr. Ketan Patel, board certi-
fied sleep specialist at Pulmo-
nary Specialist of Tyler that is
associated with ETMC-Hender-
son, said most people will get
used to the time change in just
a couple of days, but the best
way to do that is to maintain
the sleep routine you already
follow.
It is also important to avoid
naps during the day that will be
longer than 20 minutes since
that will affect your night time
sleep, Patel said.
He explained that what helps
you sleep longer and more
