or more pastures rest when
grazing the others. He tries
to rest at least one large pas-
ture per year.
His mesquite kill in the
summer of 2011 was the
largest in Denton County
that the conservation office
has participated in. The ae-
rial spraying combined with
hand spraying alongside
populated areas proved very
effective. Dan was first in-
troduced to the advantages
of brush control by Brian
Edwards, a Clay County
rancher. Dan is convinced
that brush control conserves
an enormous amount of
groundwater, and therefore,

The Denton County
Soil and Water Conser-
vation District is proud to
announce Dan Reding, of
Sanger, the “Outstanding
Conservationist” for 2013
due to his outstanding con-
servation achievements
since 1971.
Dan was also awarded
runner up in the category
of Resident Conservation
Rancher on May 7th, 2013
in Stephenville, TX at the
Texas State Soil and Water
Conservation Board’s Area
5 awards banquet.
Area 5 consists of 52
counties in Central and
North Texas. The Denton
County SWCD stated they
are honored to work with
outstanding conservation-
ists such as Dan Reding as
they continue to conserve
and preserve our natural
resources for future genera-
tions.
Dan Reding was raised
in North Eastern Denton
County until 1960, when his
family moved to the Gribble
Springs area near Sanger.
He graduated from Denton
High school in 1963, and
then from Texas Technolog-
ical College in 1967 with a
B.S. in agricultural educa-
tion. While at college, Dan
met Betty Gregory from
Spur, TX and they were
married in 1967 following
their graduation.
Betty is a retired educa-
tor that most recently taught
6th-7th grade science. Dan
and Betty raised two boys
on the ranch in Sanger;
Greg and Mac. Dan has
been a participating cooper-
ator of the Denton County
SWCD since 1971 when his
first conservation plan was
written.
The Denton County
SWCD presentation high-
lighted several of his work-
ings listed below:

servation plan, he has con-
structed 10 livestock water
