chamber, as Denise Under-
wood, who held that position
since Feb: 1986, submitted her
resignation effective Jan. 13.

An explosion and fire
destroyed a New Hope home
Tuesday night and- took the
lives of its owners, Cecil and

tiveness of the police emergen-

Police said one man had his
hand in his pocket and told the
clerk that he had a handgun. He
demanded cash, while a second
man started yelling at the
clerk, police said. *
The clerk told police the third
man approached the counter
and raised a bamboo stick
above his head, threatening to
hit the clerk. The clerk threw a
box of sigarettes at the man,
police said, and the man grew
very angry.
In both robberies, the three
men were described as
Hispanics between 17 and 25
years of age?
“The robbery in Stamford
happened around 4:30 a m.,
which would have allowed the
three robbers to drive to Stam-
ford from Abilene.” Dieken
said “But the vehicles don’t
match.”
Mills said he doesn t believe
the two robberies are related.
He said the Stamford robbers
might have been from Stam-
ford.

basketball league for boys and
girls in grades 3 through 6 with
games played on Saturday

The league is divided into two
age groups, 3rd and 4th grades

fee is $12 per child or $20 per

Tri-Area Stock Show will
be held this Saturday
The Tri-Area Livestock Show check in Saturday morning,
will get underway Saturday • Jan 6. prior to 8 a m
morning*at 9 a m. with approx-
imately 250 entries. The show
will take place at the Tri Area
Livestock Show Barn on the
Texas Cowboy Reunion
grounds.
Students from Lueders-
Avoca, Paint Creek and Stam-
ford schools will be competing
for $3,500 in prize money at the
annual show.
At 9 a m. in the large arena,
the swine show will take place
with the Breeding Guilts first,
followed by Market Barrows,
Breeding Sheep, and Market
Lambs. In the small arena at
the same time, Rabbits will
show first at 9 a m. followed by
Broilers, Capons, and Turkeys.
After lunch, the Cattle Show
will begin with Heifers showing
first, followed by Steers.
All swine entries must arrive
Friday, Jan. 5 between 1-6 p.m.
All other livestock entries must

Convenience stores
robbed during holidays
Thieves took advantage of
the holiday bussiness Friday.
Dec. 29, 1989 robbing both the
Super 7 and Allsup’s Conve-
nience Store in Stamford.
The robberies are similar to a
robbery that occurred in
Abilene just before these two
robberies.
“There may be some
similarities, but that’s about
all,” said Lt. Jack Dieken of the
Abilene Police Department.
“We don’t know yet if there is a
