Chamber to
hold
Wayland Shurley, newly ap-
pointed county Executive Direc-
tor of the Jones couty Agricul-
tural Stabilization and Conser-
vation Service (ASCS) is no
stranger to the service even
though he has been farming for
the past 13 years.
Shurley who attended school
in Lueders and graduated from
Stamford High School, began
his career with the ASCS in 1962,
measuring crops in Jones County
during the summers while he was
in college.
Following his graduation from
Tech in 1964, he taught school
in Stamford for 2 years, work-
ing for the ASCS in the sum-
mers. He began working full time
for ASCS in the summer of 1966.
Handmaidens to meet at Baptist Church
Handmaidens, an interdenominational ladies organization,
will meet at Calvary Baptist Church on Monday, Feb. 26 at 7
Taylor of Lubbock will be the guest speaker.______
Stamford Athletic Club to meet Monday
The Stamford Athletic Club will meet Monday, Feb. 26 at 7
p.m. in the school cafeteria to begin plans for their annual
athletic banquet. Everyone is invited to attend.
Jones County ASCS office hours to change
The Jones County ASCS office will change it's office hours
beginning Feb. 28 to help improve service to farmers. The
office will now be closed all day Wednesday and open for
business from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and
Friday.
Cancer Society to meet in March
The Jones County Unit of the American Cancer Society will
meet Tuesday March 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the 66 Sirloin Cafe in
Anson.
Officers and board members are urged to attend.

ASCS,” Shurley said, “ and feel
fortunate to be in Jones County.

work with farmers and ranchers
in the county.

Stamford residents can give a
special gift from the heart at a
Red Cross bloodmobile sched-
uled Feb. 26 between the hours
of 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at
Stamford VIP Center. The goal
for the day is 50 units of blood.
Donors must be between 17
and 70 years of age, in good
health and weigh 110 pounds or
more. A 17 year old must have a
Red Cross Consent Form signed
by a parent or guardian.
The Red Cross is asking the
citizens of Stamford to please
take time to make this important
contribution to their fellow man
who must have this blood to live.
The Stamford community has
used considerably more blood
than it has given for some time
now. It is a real necessity for
residents to make the attempt to
help this worth while cause.

Women's Forum to sponsor benefit dinner
The Women's Forum will sponsor a dinner to benefit the
Stamford Library Restoration at the Stamford Country Club,
March 2 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available from members of the
Stamford Garden Club, Music Club, Pierian Club, Lioness and
B&PW Club.

The Stamford Chamber of
Commerce Board of Directors
has set March 7, 1990 as its
membership “Blitz” Day.
Members will assemble at the
Chamber office at 9 a.m. where
they will be organized into teams
and given prospective mem-
bers to contact. The team will
then “BLITZ” the Stamford area
for new or former members. The
teams will be providing packets
of information to their prospects
which gives an overview of the
Chamber and goes into detail as
to the activities and events that
the Chamber sponsors.

History Day. The public is cordially invited.

Shurley appointed new
ASCS County Executive
In 1967, he became a trainee in
Snyder, and then took a position
in Burnet County for the next
six years. He served as County
Executive Director in Coleman
County for one and one-half
years, and then transferred to
Haskell County for almost a year.
In 1976, Shurley resigned from _
the ASCS and returned to farm-
ing in Ericksdahl, where he is a
partner in a farm with his cousin,
U.S. Representative Charles
Stenholm.

Eddie Hall, a senior at Stamford
High School, signed last week
with Texas Tech University to
play football for the Raiders for
the next four years.
Hall, who had also spoken to
Abilene Christian University and
New Mexico State University,
said hedecidedto sign with Tech
because he liked the coaches,
facilities, and the people of

Candidates gather for
political forum program
A good sized crowd gathered
last Saturday morning to hear
U.S. Rep. Charles Stenholm,
State Rep. David Counts and
local Democratic candidates
speak and answer questions at
the B&PW’s Meet the Candi-
dates program at the VIP Cen-
ter.
Helping to coordinate the pro-
gram was County Democratic
Chairman, John Scarborough,
Precinct Chairmen, Teresa
Denson, Cliff Cob and Don
Walker and County Democratic
Chairman, Mrs. Alma Foster.
Each candidate was allowed to
make a statement on his plat-
form for the office for which he
was a candidate,followed by a
question and answer period with
audience.
Candidates attending besides
U.S. Rep. Stenholm and State
‘ Rep. Counts were Foy Easly and
Carl Griggs, Justice of the Peace
candidates; Jerry Manske (in-
cumbent), Leon Hargrove, and
Carl Bearden, Commissioner
Precinct 2 candidates; Buryi Rye
(incumbent). County Clerk can-
didate; Quay Parker (incum-
bent), District Judge candidate;
Roy Lane, R.B. “Brad” Row-
land, and Billy Joe McKeever,
County Judge candidates;
Tom Isbell (incumbent) Tax
Assessor/Collcctor candidate;
Irene Hudson (incumbent)
County Treasurer candidate;
Nona Carley (incumbent) and
Clyde Hall, District Clerk can-
didates; and Steve Lollar (in-
cumbent), Commissioner Pre-
cinct 4 candidate.
Monica Perez was Master of
Ceremonies for the event and
Kay Looney and Betty McDou-
gal served as Program Chair-
man.
Others helping with the pro-
gram were May Corley, Sue
Stigler, Olive Casady, registra-
tion; Dorothy Clark and Pam
Cox, decorations; Bobbie Con-
nally, Ethel Bounds and Betty
McDougal, refreshments; and
Betty McDougal timekeeper.

Lubbock. When Hall, who is 6’4"
and weighs 220 pounds, reports
to Tech on August 10 for his
first season, he will be on a full
scholarship and will probably
weigh 20 pounds more.
This was not the first big honor
Hall, who has played tight end
for the Bulldogs since his so-
phomore year,
has received. In 1987, his
sophomore year, Hall was se-
lected as 1st Team All-district
defense, and punter. In 1988 he
was selected as 1st Team All-
District offense, defense and
defensive punter, was selected
for the All-Area Team as defen-
sive punter and was also selected
for the All-State Team. In 1989
Eddie was selected for All-State
3rd Team.
“I’ve always wanted to be a
professional football player,”
Hall said, “ for at least as far
back as I can remember.”
Eddie is the son of Clyde and
Essie Hall of Stamford.
