Stuart Huffman of Bur-
leson and Cliff Benson of
Cleburne will be in a run-
off election for Johnson
County Sheriff in the sec-
ond Democratic primary
June 3, according to com-
plete but unofficial re-
turns.
Benson, who is seeking
his second term, received
4,267 votes in the Demo-
cratic primary May 6.
Huffman drawing strong
support in Burleson, re-
ceived 2,598 votes. There
were no Republican can-
didates.
The key to the upcom-
ing run-off election will
be who can get the 2,277
votes cast for Trittes
Birdwell and the 459 votes
R. H. Webb received in
the first primary.
Of the 26 voting boxes
in the County, Benson
carried 19, Birdwell 5 and
Huffman 2. Huffman ran
either second or a close
third in most boxes.
Benson had strong sup-
port in the Joshua and

immediate past president
and he was presented with
an award as Officer of
the Year. It was under
his leadership that the
club attained the Number

New officers will be
installed at the last meet-
ing of the year for Bur-
leson Band Boosters.
The meeting will be
held at 7:30 p.m. Mon-
day in Burleson High
School Band Hall.
Cleburne areas while
Birdwell did well in God-
ley, Venus, Keene and
Grandview.
Huffman carried only
two of the county’s boxes
but did so in a convincing
manner. He received 448
votes to Benson’s 203 in
Precinct 10 in Burleson
and 257 votes to Benson's
155 in Precinct 25 in Bur-
leson.
Precinct 11 in Burleson
was carried by Benson
169 to 167 for Huffman.
A total of 9,582 votes
were cast in the Sheriff's
race. That figure was
more than half of the 19,
119 eligible voters in the
county and over ten per-
cent more than the es-
timated 40 percent turn-
out.

Stephens, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Ronald Calvin Step-
hens of Rt. 1, Alvarado.
According to Highway
Patrolman Frank Hall,
the station wagon driven
by Stephens failed to ne-
gotiate a turn in the road
4 miles south of Burleson
and turned over. Michael
and his sister Rhonda, 4,
were thrown out.
Rhonda received lacer-
ations of the head and
shoulders and Mr. and
Mrs. Stephens were
treated and released.
Burleson police repor-
ted a one car wreck Sun-
day evening on Hwy 174
near the Farm Road 731
intersection that sent a
young girl to Carswell
Air Force Base Hospital
in serious condition.
Injured in the accident
was Rolanda Salinas, 17,
of Keene.
Burleson police patrol-
man Charles Williams
stated the Salinas car was
traveling on Hwy. 174
when it went out of con-
trol, skidded 147 feet, and
hit a bridge. It slid
another 150 feet hitting
the right side of the
bridge, then careened an-
other 100 feet before
coming to rest in a field
along side the highway.
Miss Salinas was taken
to the intensive care unit
at Car swell AFB Hos-
pital.
City police also report-
ed three mishaps on Sat-

Burleson Jaycees—
named the most out-
standing chapter in Tex-
as in its division--post-
humously presented its
annual Outstanding Cit-
izen of the Year award
to Johnny H. Schumacher
Friday night.
It was the annual in-
stallation and awards
banquet held in the Nat-
ional Guard Armory in
Fort Worth.
Accepting the outstand-
ing citizen award was Mr.
Schumacher's widow. Mr.
Schumacher had been act-
ive in community affairs
for many years prior to
his deathonDec. 28, 1971.
A building contractor, he
had been involved in many
civic projects in addition
to his own work in con-
struction of several new
buildings. He also serv-
ed on the city's planning
commission, to which
Mrs. Schumacher was ap-
pointed after her hus-
band's death.
The Burleson chapter
learned that it had earned
designation as the Num-

Rep. Tom Holmes of
Granbury and B. Carnie
Marsh of Denton. But
Holmes outpolled Creigh-
ton on the county level,
4,496 to 3,346 and also
led when all votes were
tabulated in the 22nd Dis-
trict. His margin across
the district was less than
1,000 votes.
Creighton and Holmes
will meet in a runoff on
June 3. Holmes was list-
ed with 38,002 votes to
37,070 for Creighton and
10,388 for Marsh in dis-
trict totals.
'I had a good day,"
Holmes declared. 'I'm
looking forward to this
runoff, because it gives
us the first opportunity
in a long time to return
this important office to
the people."
Creighton spokesmen
said they still are con-
fident of winning in the
runoff and indicated a
strong campaign may be
waged.

Burleson Democrats
generally agreed with the
rest of Johnson County
and Texas in the state-
wide primary Saturday,
including giving Dolph
Briscoe a hefty lead in
the Governor's race.
Burleson also gave the
nod to C. C. (Kit) Cooke
III of Cleburne as he won
the District 33 State Rep-
resentative race over in-
cumbent J. E. Ward of
Glen Rose.
Burleson Boxes 10,11
and 25 provided a total
of 998 votes for Cooke
and 562 for Ward. Cooke
also carried Johnson
County by 5254 votes to
4125, and had good mar-
gins in Erath, Somervell
and Hood Counties. There
were no Republican can-
didates.
Burleson gave a slight
margin to Sen. Tom
Creighton of Mineral
Wells in his bid for re-

April 22. It was the third
such trophy to go to the
pretty lass. In the Miss

daughter of Mrs. Agatha
Wolaver and is a junior
