In the era of steadily increas-
ing auto accidents with their
consequent deaths and injuries,
the safety experts have coined
a new phrase to help us survive
in traffic—“defensive driving.”
What is defensive driving?
Basically, it is keeping full
control of your car at all times,
so that you can avoid an acci-
dent no matter what the other
fellow does.
Some of the fundamentals of
defensive driving are outlined in
TODAY’S HEALTH, the maga-
— Never “tailgate.” This
practice of following too close-
ly the vehicle ahead haa been
found to be a common cause of
accidents. Stay back one car
length for each 10 miles of
speed.
— When you have a driver
tailgating you, slow down and
encourage him to pass.
— Expect the driver ahead of
you to brake without warning.
Watch especially for situations
which will cause him to slow
down or stop.
— Stop smoothly and gradu-
ally when there is a vehicle be-
hind you. Signal your inten-
tions of stopping, slowing down,
