Foster provided Panola with plenty
of exciting moments. They kept the
Ponies within striking distance at
43-40 at halftime, and later had

Five of the Jags scored in dou-
ble figures, none with more than 17
or less than 10. Another tallied
eight and another seven. How's that
for balance?
They didn't miss many shots
from the floor (36 of 66 (54.5 per-
cent) and were especially tough
when the burners were lit in the fi-
nal period (18 of 29,62.1%).
Bailey didn't dwell on the issue,
other than to say he was surprised
by thejneident and the way it was
handled. He's too classy to cry.
But after the game was history,
the media types got together and
voted an MVP. Since only The
Panola Watchman was present for
voting, it was unanimous: the ze-
bras were co-recipients, the one
with the whistle, the other with the
pen.

The transformation from docile
tabby to ferocious feline is instantly
noticeable. A monster stalks the
jungle. Pony's hide becomes cat’s
meat. The show's rating goes from
PG to X-rated in a fell swoop.
Women and children should have
been required to cover their eyes,
the carnage was so severe.
What had been a great game in
the first half disintegrated into a
runaway. Panola's recovery from a
horrendous 11-0 deficit in the
opening 3:39 was ancient history,
a forgotten subject by game's end.
Going in, Bailey felt his charges
had a chance, despite Jacksonville's
home court advantage and his
club's humble one-for-the confer-
ence record.
Those first 13 TEC losses didn't
mean anything now, lie surmised,
because Panola was playing only
for the moment, no visions of play-
offs to clutter the mind.
He knows there are only one
two TEC teams Ponies can’t beat,
when the chemistry is right.

THE PANOLA WATCHMAN
Eastern Conference play.
I ' t The Jacksonville scorekeeper,
apparently protesting a personal
foul called on a Jacksonville
player, ignited the fuse.
The lead official of the three-
man TEC crew suddenly turned
away from the scorer's table, raced
near the end of the court and or-
dered the services of a police offi-
cer assigned to crowd control to get
. remove the scorekeeper from the
t premises.
"1 don't have to take that," the
ref screamed, "he's oulta heaaahh."
When play was about to be re-
sumed, the same official suddenly
motioned into the stands and
ejected a Jacksonville fan from the
student body.
Play was begun, then suddenly
halted again. While the first fan is
going, going, gone, another takes
up the cause and he's history, too.
Referee 3, Hecklers 0. See 'ya.
During this time Panola is like
standing around wondering what to
do. The game is delayed. Their
momentum is halted. They go flat
as a pancake.
Meanwhile the local fans are in
a feeding frenzv, and the Jaguars
are feeding off Utem.

JACKSONVILLE - The turn-
ing point in the game came when
the official scorekeepcr got the
■, heave-ho from the lead referee in
■ the second half of a war between
‘ ’ Jacksonville and Panola in the jun-
gle here Saturday night.
At first blush it was more comi-
'' cal than awe-inspiring - the ejec-
tion of one zebra by another played
out on a broad stage with lots of
theatrics. But that only precipitated
a series of events that soon bode ill
will for Panola. Suddenly it was a a
jungle out there with the Jaguars in
their element.
"It really hurt- us. It really fired
them up," Panola coach Rennie
Bailey noted dejectedly of the se-
ries of bizarre events early in the
second half.
The Jaguars exploded suddenly
in a feeding frenzy and before or-
der could be semi-restored, they
had ravaged the stunned Ponies on
their way to a 89-74 win in Texas
losing effort
Only this one wasn't same old,
same old -- no way.
No, the Ponies had been rode
hard and put up wet and they
weren't laughing, man, they weren't
even smiling.

re-schedule
Carthage basketball games
with Henderson were postponed
Friday night by inclement
weather and are re-scheduled
for Thursday with the boys
hosting the Lions and the Lady
Bulldogs journeying to Hender-
son for a possible title show-
down in 17-AAAA.
Going into action Tuesday
night, Carthage held a one-
game lead over the Lady Lions
and needed only a win over
Hallsville to clinch at least a
share of the championship. A
Carthage win and a Henderson
loss to Pine Tree in Longview
would give the Lady Dogs an
outright title.
If. however, both teams pre-
vail Thursday's meeting would
be for the crown.
Of course Hallsville and
Pine Tree are still in the run-
ning for a playoff berth as the
exciting girls' chase draws to an
end this week.
The boys still have two
weeks of action ahead before
settling their title. Jacksonville
sets the pace with Pine Tree two
behind after losing last week to
Carthage.
