"John Hill may be the best candidate for governor in decades. Judging from
his record, he should win easily over his Republican opponent, whose chief
qualification is money. Unlike his opponent, Hill is not given to outrageous
promises, intemperate personal attack or underhanded tactics. He will work
hard for the best interests of the state and its people
— Austin American Statesman
"The more Mr. Clements has explained his blunt viewpoints — even those
views we could agree with — the more he has raised doubt as to how
effective a bulldozer could be in Texas government. Conversely, John Hill
has grown in our evaluation as a man who not only is the best state attorney
general in recent history, but also is a man with the mtellience, savvy and
ability to serve Texas well as governor
“We believe Hill will bring vitality and leadership to state government. Hill is
not an advocate of big government Nor is he a free spender. He has
pledged that no new taxes will be levied if he is elected. His anti-inflation
program is the kind of fiscal conservatism Texans can accept gleefully.’’

Remember the new Social
Security law, tripling pay
roll taxes for everyone?
Against the strong object
ions of many of us that such
a measure ould be a
springboard to more inflat
ion, Congress passed and the
President signed into law an
unwarranted $227 billion
Social Security tax measure.
That’s why more than RO
percent of the nation's more
than 88.5 million taxpayers
will get in effect a larger tax
bill—not a smaller one —next
year, because the one more
than offsets the other
The Treasury Depart
ment reports that regard
less of the $18.7 billion
reduction, the tax measure
won’t nearly be enough to
counter steeper Social Secu
ity taxes or the impact of
inflation pushing individuals
into higher tax brackets.
In fact, about the only
good thing to be said about
the tax cut bill is that it will
come just in time to soften
the one two punch taxpay-
ers are assured next year
from Social Security and
double digit inflation.
Consider a few examples.
Married couples with two
dependents in the $20,000
income bracket will receive
a tax decrease under the
new measure amounting to
$167. But new Social
Security taxes will cost that
family $82 and inflation will
add still another $97 to the
total. Net to this family: an
increase of $12.

$20,000 category would
receive a $98 income tax cut
under the measure. Social
Security, however, would
add $82 and inflation
another $91. Net increase to
the unsuspecting couple;
$75.
Single taxpayers in that
income category will receive
a $117 tax cut. Rut Social

$100 will be lost to inflation.
The result; $65 net loss next
