gone ahead, made this sound
like the Promised Land.
Before ferrying across the
Red River the little girl
drank of the water because
her father had written that
the Indians drank of it
because they felt that it
made them "cunning and
strong." Will, her eleven
year old brother, rushed to
get a drink, too. They
could leave the cunning to
the Indians, but in Texas
they would need to be
strong to meet the new
adventures.
These included living in a
log house, surprising twelve
Indians eating squirrel stew
from their iron pot on their
stove, a real cattle drive that
flowed an unbelieveable
river of cattle and dust and
men up their road.
Hope Caldwell, the Indian
princess of the Choctaws,
came riding sidesaddle on a
plump little pony to spend
the day. Play parties were
the evening entertainment
and the Virginia Reel and
Old Joe Clark were the
favorites.
The latter had originated
right there on Red River. It

Siddle Joe Johnson and
Dallas Public Library are
almost synonymous. She is
in charge of the children’s
department at the library
and sometimes writes a
book. One of hers that we
have on our shelves is New
Town in Texas and it
describe early days in
Denison. M. K. and T.
. Railway has been the heart
of Denison and came there
about 15 years before the
Santa Fe came to Sanger in
1887. Denison/had «more
contact with‘'Indians as it
was nearer the Oklahoma
Territory; the association of
this family with an Indian
family particularly interes-
ted me. The Indian girl, a
princess, who came to call
had a servant waiting in the
light wagon type convey-
ance outside. In this day it
would have been a station
wagon, perhaps.
This Illinois family came to
Texas by covered wagon and
sight of the Red River was
exciting to Abby, twelve
years old, as well as to the
re' he Thompson family
ath months journey.
They hail < me in a wagon
train with other friends.
