Only a month after a
delegation from Collin and
Denton counties asked the
Highway Commission to
designate a section of Texas
12 1 as a freeway, the
Commission did Just that.
At Its August meeting, the
Commission gave freeway
status to a stretch of the state
highway, from
Farm-to-Market Road 544 to
US 75.
"Local officials have
committed to do their share,
and we re happy to work with
them," said Raymond
Stotzer, engineer-director of
the highway department.
In July public hearing,
Collin County officials
pledged $250,000 for
preliminary work that will
lead to the two-lane
highway's expansion to a
six-lane, controlled-access
freeway. Freeway status for

Highway Commission Gives
Texas 121 Freeway Status
expected to spend $375,000
during preliminary
planning for the project.
As a first step in the
expansion. Texas 12 1 will
become a four-lane divided
highway between Texas 289
and US 75. Construction of
this phase of the project is
estimated to cost more than
$20 million.
No funding for
right-of-way has been
authorized After local
officials determine how
much right-of-way will be
donated, the Commission
will consider funding based
on statewide priorities and
availability of funds.
One factor in the
Commission's decison to
move ahead on this project
was a feasibility study that
recommended Texas 121 for
freeway designation. The
highway is a direct link
between McKinney and the
Dallas-Fort Worth
International Airport,
through an area that is
experiencing rapid growth
and development.
