We hope that Eva Shea is recuperating rapidly this week.
She was taken by ambulance to the emergency room at Ho-
tel Dieu Hospital on Sunday, suffering from severe flu
symptoms. The flu bug seems to have many different symp-
toms, aches and pains. Maybe it will run its course pret-
ty soon.

"The secret of success in
life is for a man to be ready
for his opportunity when it
comes." These are important
words by Benjamin Disraeli. If
you have the feeling that your
life is stuck, there is only
one.word of advice you need --
move! Move in some direction.
You can always alter your
course if necessary. But for
now, take some direction,.make
some change, do something.
Then you will be ready for
your opportunity when it
comes.

Mrs. Martha Ainsworth was hospitalized recently at the
Sierra Medical Hospital in El Paso. She is undergoing
therapy for some ligament trouble in her legs. Her
daughter, Peggy Hudson, was with her for two weeks to
help out. Another daughter, Martha Lewis, is a secre-
tary in the office Bob Bullock in Austin. We hope that
Mrs. Ainsworth is feeling much better, and glad to hear
that Peggy and family, and Tex and family are enjoying
the Hudspeth County Herald! They live in Lawn, Texas.
Enjoyed a visit last week from Dr. Larry Hooper. Dr.
Hooper had flown out from El Paso in the ideal flyinq
weather, and was visiting friends in the valley. A
Captain in the Civil Air Patrol, Dr. Hooper had recent-
ly received a special certificate forAerospace Educa-
tion Program & Senior Members. Dr. Hooper was enjoying
a week's vacation from Pediatrics at Thomason General
Hospital. Tentative plans are that he will.be doing
some teaching this fall.

LAKI: LORES I. II. America's teen
lenders have come to terms with drink-
ing. drugs and sex. but not with suicide.
This is among the findings of the
Sixteenth Annual Survey of High
Achievers conducted by Who’s Who
Among American High School Stu-
dents. The survey showed that less than
one-sixth of the high achievers regularly
drink, take drugs or have sex, while
more than one-third have had to deal
with the issue of suicide, either with
themselves or with friends.
The survey further showed 57 percent
of students have either never, had an
alcoholic beverage or have tried alcohol
but don’t drink now. Only 16 percent
ol students drink more often than once
a month.
Who’s Who Students are even more
conservative in their drug usage. Ninety-
four percent have never tried, or tried
but don't now use. marijuana; more
than 94 percent have never tried, or
tried but don’t use: cocaine, PCP. LSD.
amphetamines and barbituates. The
majority of teens (66 percent) also note
they would not want to be friends with
someone who takes drugs.
Seventy-six percent of teen achievers
have never had sexual intercourse. And,
82 percent do not believe sexual inter-
course is an expected part of a steady
romantic relationship. Of teens who
have “gone steady," only 19 percent
have felt pressured to have sex. Eighty-
two percent of females said that pressure
came from their boyfriend; 69 percent
ol males cited their friends as pres-
suring them to have sex with their
girlfriend.
One problem facing teens today which
high achievers have been unable to
avoid is teen suicide. The survey
revealed that more than one-third (40
percent) of teens know a young person
who has committed or tried to commit
suicide. Twenty-eight percent have con-
sidered suicide themselves.
As for the factors which most con-
tribute to teen suicide, teens cite:
depression (85 percent); a feeling of
isolation and loneliness (80 percent);
pressure to achieve (72 percent); and a
lack of communication between teens
and parents (65 percent).
Teens indicated that parents may be
instrumental in preventing youth sui-
cides. The number one solution to the
teen suicide problem cited by Who’s
Who students was suicide awareness
programs for teens and their parents,
noted by 74 percent of teens surveyed.
Another 43 percent feel that if parents
were more involved with teachers and
counselors, it would help prevent teen
